Maybe somebody made a similar topic some ago, but I saw Fred`s picture (back of his yard I guess) and wondered what does he play while looking at it?
I play hard rock from the 70`s, a bit metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden) and some from Vai, Satriani and Becker. Also Hendrix and some blues.

I play mainly original material with my band. but i play around with some metallica, slayer riffs, maiden riffs, sabbath and like that especially if theres a technique i'm trying to pick up i'll learn it by playing a riff that uses it...

I play a little bit of everything, but these days mostly traditional jazz. I'm a beginner, so I play mostly real book stuff, Autumn Leaves and such. Some more interesting songs, but mostly out of the book.

I play mostly classic rock, blues, and originals. A little hard rock and country because the bassist and drummer I was working with were more into 80's metal and the singer was into country.

I've played a lot of stuff over the years.

Lately it's classic rock from the 60's and 70's that has my attention. Stuff like Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, The Beatles, The Who, Zepplin, early Kansas.

I also go through phazes where I play a lot of 80's rock/metal like Metallica, Iron Maiden, the real and IMHO only Guns N Roses, Van Halen, etc. I also dabble in blues from time to time and have taken formal training in the styles of Classical and Jazz although I'm still trying to regain my technique since taking a lengthy lay off from guitar because of an injury I suffered a while back. Also, Classical is best played on a nylon string acoustic, which I don't have right now.

I also enjoy writing my own stuff, but it's not that fun right now since I don't even have any recording gear or a band to jam with and work out my ideas. Hopefully soon I can at least get the recording gear.

I also shouldn't forget, as my technique gets back to something close to where I used to be, I will likely start to move into prog territory. Dream Theater is one of my favourite bands and Kansas has a lot of stuff that's beyond my technical grasp right now. Rush is another band I enjoy a lot too, but my biggest challenge in most of their songs will likely be the odd timings they use more than building up my chops.

And I forgot to mention I've been jamming along to lots of Deep Purple lately too. Funny how they don't consider themselves prog but they were miles ahead of their peers in terms of compositional skills and technique back in the day. They often "out-progged" most of the bands who considered themselves prog. lol

and a song I've been wanting to tackle lately but am having a hard time with, because I'm just having trouble finding a decent recording of it is Georgia On My Mind. I've got tabs for it around somewhere too, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the voicings of some of the chords since none of my theory books has an example and I'm a bit rusty on my chord construction theory and drawing a blank. I'll keep at it though. If I can find the right version of the song and an accurate transcription that shows the chord voicings maybe I'll get it sooner or later.

thanks Joba, I'll let you know who it works out for me.

I think I may have a copy of The Glamour Puss Blues Band, a local blues band, playing the song that's quite good quality. These guys have released their own material independantly and have opened for people like Buddy Guy and BB King. I saw the BB King concert the opened and I'll tell you the guitarist was on cloud 9 there...he is a huge fan of BB as well as the Freddie King.

of course I could also easily track down the Ray Charles version somewhere too. I've got a couple of versions of it in a solo guitar arrangement too but I was hoping for more of a version where I was playing.

From blues to metal. Well, I try. I learned the guitar on Deep Purple and Rainbow tunes, which is in the middle of said range, so that's still a big part of how play.

the other night I finally got to jam with some other musicians at a party I was invited to. Add Rolling Stones to that list of 60's and 70's artists I played. I didn't know many of the songs but managed to BS it through.

funny thing was, I got invited to the party because last time I showed up as a guest of one of the other guests, they got me jamming with the band (the owner of the house was the keys player and has a really cool vintage Hammond complete with a leslie cabinet).

I guess they liked what they heard because I was invited back for the purpose of jamming at the party with them. This time I left my email address and phone number with the sober member of the group so if they want to jam again they don't have to wait until our mutual friend from out of province comes to visit. (the last time I gave it to the bassist who was apparently high as a kite and he lost it)

I can't wait to jam with these guys again, hopefully next time I'll know far enough ahead to get the lyrics together for some songs I'd like to jam on with them. They seem to prefer that when there are lyrics that someone at least attempts to sing them.

I play the original stuff I write for my band - Female Fronted Guitar Driven Rock. When we dabble in covers we take pop hits and rock them up or play other guitar driven songs like Guns N' Roses, Heart, Iron Maiden etc...

I find it fascinating how many people here are influences by Metallica. Here is a band who has not put out anything decent and yet still influences guitar players world wide. I am guessing you are all playing their older stuff (Black Album or earlier)?

What ever gets you to plug in and play!!

Rock on!!

I have been paling originals all of my life. Usually though, If I'm in the mood, and I'm listening to something in the car that influences me enough, I'll go home play it on the guitar first, and then try and come up with my own riff using some of the methods, be it effects, chord progressions, whatever it may be. But I just started recording for the first time in almost seven years, (haven't had any equipment), and the song I'm writing right now, "Lady Gypsy," about my wife, of course, is starting to come together. I've written a drum loop, that has a jazzy feel, and instead of writing the bass line, I wrote the guitar part first, and then wrote the bass on the bass-simulator, and now I think I'll throw in some trumpet, polish it off and arrange the lyrics that have been going around in my head, so I can lay down the vocal. It will be my first recording on the new machine, so we'll see. Maybe I'll send a version of it to one of you via snail mail, and you could post it on here. I don't know how to do such things.
