I see that a lot of the members like to play rock and metal and I do too,but I dont hear much about the blues. It is such great music and it is not talked about much. I plan to post a video of me playing Red House soon from Jimi Hendrix. Who are your favorite blues players? Here is a cool clip. This is Eric Johnson,Joe Satriani and Steve Vai

There are a lot of great blues players out there and some who are no longer with us. My favorites would have to be Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kenny Wayne Shepard, B.B. King, Lightning Hopkins, Doyle Bramhall (Arc Angels), Jimmie Vaughan and Eric Johnson to name a few....ok more than a few LOL.

I wouldn't call Jerry Douglas "blues" per se' but then I would say that EJ or Hendrix is not either. Just because you can pull off blues scales and there may be some blues influenced phrasing in their playing, that does not make them blues players.

Wolf, Muddy, the 3 Kings (bb,albert, freddy), Peter Green, Keb Mo, and so many more.

Another metal kind of player who is also a good blues player is Mark Kendall of Great White fame. He does a killer version of "Red House."

Where are the blues players? They\'re younger than you might think!

We have a group in the studio called \"The Runnin\' Wild Band.\" These guys are players who know their stuff and are focused on results. They\'re professional in every sense of the word. The surprise comes when you find out the bass player and drummer are only 15. The guitar player is 17.

I honestly hate mp3\'s and this doesn\'t do them justice. The recording is also \"raw.\" Meaning it hasn\'t been mixed or tweaked in any way. There are no doubled tracks. This was done live, so far, and there is more to be added. Guitar is... Hmmmm... Maybe you should guess the size of the amp, or if it were run through a POD or other kind of emulator, or maybe it\'s just a direct recording?

Some of the other parts of this particular cut, called \"Jeckel and Hyde,\" are posted in the recording forum if you\'re interested in hearing more. (The complete cut is about 13 minutes and it\'s not all here. I had to break it up because I had to use a cheap, \"shareware\" mp3 maker for this, so I apologize for the crappy sound. In the control room, listening to these guys makes your skin crawl. Watching them perform, it appears they put little effort into their playing. The result is simply amazing!

I particularly like this section.

Oh, yeah...

These cuts are from another blues group. When recorded they were called "Fat Hamster." They're now known as "Trick Shot."

Older guys, (40's, 50's,) who also rock.

interesting.

As for the running wild band.. not bad. The guys have "skills" but the slide playing needs work. Intonation is off in a couple of places and in my opinion it is not driving anywhere. As for equipment used, who knows? As you are aware in a "real" studio equipment should be/could be/is a non-issue. I've used Champs and VGx's and it sounds as good as the Eng recording it.

Fat Hamster/Trick Shot. I know these guys (well, not really never met them but have the Fat Hamster demo)
They have a "thing" they do that is pretty entertaining but I'm not crazy about the female singer. That's probably just me. I was never a fan unless it was Etta or Koko and even then it is iffy sometimes. :-)

When the were Fat Hamster, they had a male singer. If you have their CD, then it actually came from my former chief engineer's studio. (Except for harp parts on a few things. He couldn't get it to sound as good as it did in my studio.)

Fat Hamster with a Male singer .. right.. that's it. Did they have a full blown CD? I have a non-mastered 3 or 4 song "cd" that the harp player sent me.

Don't keep in touch with them as much as I probably should :-( ..

I'm pretty sure they did complete a CD with Module Overload Studio. Might want to check with Jack and see if you can get a complete copy. Actually, the male singer they dumped and replaced with the female singer, wasn't all that good. They also replaced the singer on the cuts I posted with yet another female singer who blows this one away.

Also like your comment on the studio sound of a recorded guitar. There are so many players here who just don't realize that it shouldn't make any difference in the sound whether recording an amp, emulator or direct. In the end it should just reflect as a difference in tone.

There's more but, in my mind, these guys are the bosses when it comes to blues, modern or old school.

I agree with John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa. John Mayer is a dark horse, he mainly keeps under wraps what an amazing blues guitarist he is, but one day he'll drop the pop charade and focus on the real music! :)

That Bonnamassa clip is gross! I love Vai, Satch and Johnson, but I don't know that I'd say they were bluesmen...
Doyle Bramhall, Derek Trucks, Joe Bonnamassa, John Mayer are really, really good current players...

I like the bluesy stuff, too, but haven't really spent any time with it yet, y'know, transcribing great solos and such...

There are tons of good blues guitar players out there. They just don't get airplay on the overly formatted radio stations of today. Check out Indigenous. Mato Nanji can really play. Bonamassa is a favorite on mine to. Jonny Lang, John Mayer, Eric Clapton, SRV, KWS, BB King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, johnny Winter, Jeff Beck.

Mike Bloomfield was a big influence on me, just from his interviews. He turned me on to Clapton, Robin Trower and Terry Haggerty (of Sons of Champlin).
