Jason,

As we get more and more users here, I see a continuing "issue."

Many of these new users tend to search old posts and bring them back up to the top of the queue. In theory, there is probably little wrong with this, but in practice, what happens is it pushes the most current posts off the front page.

How about an aging feature? If no one has posted to a particular post in 30 or 60 days, could it be "aged" so that if you have something to say about the subject, you would have to post a new topic? Just seems silly to bring up posts that no one has touched in months, and no one will probably touch again because, with the passage of time, it's just not relevant to the bulk of the community.

It would certainly help to keep the site clean and current!

I agree.
Someone brought back my "2 mm picks" old topic from 4 months ago...

Interesting. The whole "bump" effect is what we have going now, it's pretty straightforward and I see the limitations of it as you describe.

I'll put some thought into an algorithm to avoid this. Thanks for the suggestion Xark!

In my defense (because this may be about me trying to bring back the "mercy shots" thread) it was easier to bring back the old one than start a new one for my 2 stupid pictures. I suppose I should have just forgotten about it, considering the thread died off a month ago, but I thought I wasn't the only one trying to find time to get the pictures up there. My bad.

Some threads shouldn't die off while others should. You'd need a moderator to choose which were dead and which should be allowed to continue. The mercy shots is a good example.. That is a living post that should never die however, there was a post once about this guy who wanted us to choose basketball or college that was still being answered way beyond it's usefulness.

Need hands on action to choose which to discard and which to allow to live.

I just saw what sparked Xark's suggestion.

IMO the jokes thread classifies as one of those that can be bumped without being out of context.

Sure posts get bumped out of the first page. That happens even with just current threads. That's why page 2 is there. I often have to check page 2. Now if that is too much hassle for Xark, that's nobody's fault.

In fact, there are indeed threads that make no sense posting to anymore, like the basketball vs guitar thread, but I don't think we're having a problem with those, not to the point where action is required.

No... Not any one in particular. (Not you either MizzLizz...) What sparked this is that I've seen lots of other users get a little upset when the first page gets flooded by old posts. (OK... It annoys me too.) Mostly because I don't always know what forum a post is in, so when it gets pushed off the front page it takes a search to find it again.

Yes, there are some posts that should just die, but there are others, like the Mercy Shot post that probably shouldn't and I'm sure there will be others in that same vein. A discussion post, however, has pretty much been finished when no one posts to it for 30 days. I've seen old posts like, "I'm thinking of buying a new guitar what do you suggest," that haven't been touched in 6 months. Posts like THAT should just die.

Now the whole idea has just become difficult to deal with. Unless the onus is put on the user to keep any post they want alive, alive by posting to it regularly. Guess there really is no simple solution here.

We could do a "bury" feature. Where if this were to happen and a certain amount of users clicked a bury button it would remove from the recent activity page..

Because like you guys say there are some topics that should keep going and some that should not, it's not something that can be resolved with an algorithm. So perhaps we rely of the community to decide?

Sounds like a good idea, Jason. Didn't know how difficult that would be, but this is a community site and it shouldn't be the wishes of one, or even a few, driving the changes. Would be nice to have it done automatically, but I understand the pitfalls and potential fallout.

It's usually SATAN that immediately jumps on a user for bringing up a 6 month old post, and maybe I got caught up in that attitude, along with a few others who apparently feel the same way.

I just feel that a new users first impression shouldn't be one of us complaining that they're not doing something right. More than old posts, my reason for the suggestion was to keep the new user from getting nasty messages from other users who feel they're hosing the site by bringing back dead posts.

Whatever you can do is well appreciated.

I vote for the bury feature. That would be nice to force out some of the stupidity you see sometimes too (Billy Bob anyone?). Glad it wasn't me, though. I thought everyone was going to hate me. :*( Lol.

No MizzLizz... We love you! Since you're an acoustic person, (I understand you believe you're forced,) check out my acoustic post. You might actually enjoy some of it if you can stop laughing long enough.

Not so much forced to play acoustic, I just would like to play both. I think I could really shred on electric if I had the access necessary to learn. But I enjoy acoustic too. Thanks for the love. :o*

I like the idea of the community to decide if the topic stays or if it is moved.
A moderator would be a nice idea, though.

Once again, Xark, when a post is pushed out of the front page of the forums (I assume we're talking about the recent activity page), you just scroll down and hit the "next page". Eventually you'll find the thread more easily than looking in all the different sections. (I'm sorry if I'm saying something you already know, it just sounds like don't)

Sure, I get annoyed too some times when an old thread comes up again. It is nothing compared to the annoying waiting until all 80 posts of a thread have loaded so I can scroll to the bottom and see what's new.
