As cool as it might be to see all posts in one page, it inevitably has a major drawback.

Long threads with many replies become increasingly slow to load. The last posts load last and they are usually the posts of current interest. So one has to wait a lot before being able to read the last posts and reply.

I think the threads should be split in pages with like 20-30 posts per page. Then a "go to last" function can be implemented and linked in the central recent activity page of the forums.

Funny... The ONE issue I DON'T have is speed. Working at the old Bell Labs in Denver means we have backbone connections. There's an internet UNIX server right next to me. Unfortunately the company is a bit anal about what we're allowed to see on the internet. So while there's a LOT of stuff I can't look at or listen to, I can do it really FAST!

Thanks for bringing this up ibz. I have some plans for an ajax type paging, where you don't go to a new page but rather reveal the next 20 posts. We'll get it implemented as soon as possible.

What about having newest posts 1st as opposed to last? You can scroll down to "catch up" but if all you are looking for are the current posts they would appear 1st.

I've thought about that. Logically it makes sense but people get confused. By nature they read top to bottom left to right I find.

Yeah, that could be a problem... It depends, I like threads to be in straight chronological order. Comments to videos like youtube can be in reverse order and I don't mind.

What I'm basically asking for here is a way to access the bottom immediately without depending on the older replies to load first. I don't know what ajax is and how it works, but if you think it will work that's fine by me.

Another thing I'm thinking is this. When you click on the title or comments link, you get to see the thread top to bottom. If you click on the last post link (which, I repeat, is missing from the activity page of the forums), you get to see the thread last post first. Or maybe this will become too confusing?

Ok I see what you mean now. When you utilize the last post link do you find you are still waiting for the older posts to load first? It jumps you right down, but do you still encounter the delay you mentioned? I imagine you would, I think I'm asking if jumping down alleviates any frustration with waiting, then having to scroll.

And if this is the case wouldn't simply adding the last post link to the discussions main page do the trick?

Well the last post link has to load the entire page too before the last post anchor is found.

But today the pages are loading faster than usual.

Adding the last post link everywhere to alleviate the long scrolling would be really nice. Put the page-splitting thing on hold for now. I'll survive with a last-post link. But that's easy for me to say, I have 20Mbps broadband...
