I have six guitars, 2 acoustics both epiphone masterbuilt, 1 1935 125 gibson acoustic electric, 1 1975 gibson sg, an american fender strat and a les paul black beauty that i brought from a pawn shop. (not real)The reason I have six guitars is because I can't afford 20. I love to collect them and play them. They all have their own personality distinct sound.

i share the same addiction, and i play them all and love them here is what i have....

1- 1969 les paul gold top ($200 at a yard sale......you can cry...its ok....)

2- 50th aniversary fender stratocaster (USA)

3- 1950's strat (reissue... and i LOVE IT!!! it is the seafoam ghreen one...)

4- taylor acoustic (cant remember the model off the top of my head)

5- Gibson les paul special (it saounds the same as most more expensive les pauls, but i have a hard time beating on anything over $1000)

6- USA made jackson dinky (white, with maple neck and fingerboard, black shark fins, floyd)

7- dean dimebag darry tribute (WORST PLAYING AND SOUNDING GUITAR I HAVE EVER PLAYED!! looks great on the wall next to my life size dimebag cutout though...hehe)

8- Warmoth strat i made. this is my favorite guitar. swamp ash body, flamed maple neck and fingerboard, duncan SH-1 bridge pickup, fender custom shop texas specials for middle and neck. it is PERFECT. i would recommend a warmoth to anyone. www.warmoth.com i diddnt even paint the body... i woodburned prases in latin on the back. it says stuff like "people in togas are plotting against me" and stuff ike that..... it looks really worn in and i just cant say enough about this wonderful guitar.

9-mexican strat... actually.... 2 of them... one is in pieces though

10- Epiphone DOT- great guitar for cheap

11- EVH frankenstein replica - not the new fender one. i made it out of parts from warmoth... you cant tell the difference unless you know the guitar inside and out...

12-13- i am working on 2 more warmoths at the moment as well. one with a solid brazilian rosewood neck. it looks and feels AMAZING. the body is going to be made by me. will resemble the shape of a warwick corvette bass, and has no inlays on the neck but at the butt of the guitar i am inlaying the harley davidson logo in pearl, abalone, and african blackwood.

my brain hurts.. i have a few more cheapies, and a fender acoustic......... yeah, so i know where you are coming from guitaress.

I got 4:

1 6string solid body electric w/ whammy
1 6string acoustic
1 12string acoustic
1 5string electric bass

Each occupies a different niche with minimal overlapping. I hate having stuff with vastly overlapping functions.

I've got a few as well...

1928 Stella Blues 12 string.
1965 Vox Mini XII serial number 000024.
OK... That's it for the classics!
Fender acoustic/electric 12 string.
Carvin acoustic/electric 12 string.
Takimine acoustic 12 string.
Dean acoustic/electric 6 string.
Dean 12 string banjo. (OK, so it's not exactly a guitar, but it's played the same.)
Epiphone electric 12 string.
DeArmond electric 6 string.
Epiphone Les Paul Pee Wee 6 string. (Matches the tuning on the VOX Mini XII.)
Dean acoustic bass.
Carvin fretless active/passive electric bass.

I'll leave off all the percussion, the two violins, the three sax's, the flute, the keyboards, etc.

Why? I play mostly 12's. I also use several alternate tunings. So in the acoustic realm, my 12's are tuned to those alternates so I don't have to retune all the time. (Stella - DADGAD Fender - Drop or double drop D Takimine - Open Carvin - Standard.) I bought the 6 string acoustic and electrics for fill. The VOX was used in the 60's to "fatten" guitar sounds because they didn't have as many tracks as we have today. We still use it in the studio for that purpose. The Pee Wee was purchased just because it matched the VOX in size and tuning. Basses are basses and the banjo was just for fun.

I currently have 3

BC Rich 2002 NJ JR-V with EMG Hz's played the piss outa this one
BC Rich 2007 Neck Thru JR-V Deluxe with EMG 81/85 will be playing the piss outa this one
Jackson JS30 KING V EMG Hz in the bridge POS beater guitar

I've owned a lot of different guitars the last 10+ years up to 16 at one time, but i've settled down a bit with my GAS, now that i've realized its not the gear but how i play that makes the difference in my playing and tone.

I know what you mean with the alt tunings. I want to tune my fender to e flat tuning, because I wanted to practice to Stevie Ray. ,
And I'd play my sg when I into the ACDC, but I may need another fender for my blues and Jimi Hendrix and also, everyone should have a gibson les paul.

Utilitarian reasons...I like to have one guitar do one thing really well. I also like taking a cheap diamond in the rough and making it a tone machine. Here's my current collection:

Ibanez RG320FM - Evolutions / 3-way switch (I also like to keep it simple...)

Ibanez RG350MDX - Super Distortions / 3-way switch (I switched out the Area 58/61 experimental set I had in it)

Ibanez RT650FM - Cruisers neck / mid, Fast Track 2 bridge / locking tuners / Wilkinson VS100G bridge

Ibanez RX170 - Yeah, I know they're el-cheapo axes, but I'm dropping a white pickguard and those Area 58/61 pickups in it to have a real Hendrix-looking and sounding monster Ibanez strat. It will also accept a Wilkinson bridge ;)

Ibanez AES10EAM acoustic - I love the sparkly tone this thing has. Great for tracking acoustic parts.

Ibanez AEF20CSN classical - gotta have a nylon string, right?

I'm currently shopping for a bass. I'm attracted to the Ibanez ATK series, for some reason.

So that'll make 7 once I buy the bass. I have a 7-slot guitar stand and it'll be nice to have it filled up. I think at that point I'll be set for a while.

wow shane, you do love your ibanez's.back on topic, i only have two guitars, and i haven;t been playing for long, maybe 5 months, i have

1. Austin Acoustic - i don't think it's a great guitar exactly, but my brother had wanted to play guitar a long time ago, but he quit and has lent this guitar to his friends who wanted to learn, so it's really devolped a much better tone than it did when we first had it, it's about 8 years old now.

2.Epiphone SG G-400 vintage - this was my first electric, and i was really surprised with how good it felt because i got i off ebay. but the neck and action is almost perfect, it looks great and the sound is pretty nice.

I hope to buy at least two more guitars when i become a more accomplished player, the cleans are good on my epiphone, but it doesn't have the tone of a tele or stratocaster, and i want something to handle some metal type stuff, i don't really know who's considered the best for that, i was thinking about ESP or Jackson.

Ok.

Gibson Flying V - used to be gothic series, but has had every piece on it replaced - all the hardware is chrome, skull knobs, classic 57 pickups, my name is engraved on both the stop bar and the pickups. It plays more comfortably than any other guitar I own, more than likely because I've been playing it since 1998. It has a rounded 1959 les paul style neck so it feels meaty without being overly chunky. While I'm not into super heavy stuff anymore, with the classic 57's in there now it definately has a great rock and blues tone.

Gibson Blueshawk - I really wanted a tele thinline, but I prefer set necks, rosewood fingerboards, and angled headstocks... then this came along. Semi hollow, single coil pickups, and a v-shaped neck for smooth huge bends. I love it.

Guild acoustic - not sure of the model number [names are easier than 6-digit "codes"] but it was mighty expensive. It's got a cutaway and a really cutting midrange, great for playing live and recording leads.

Epiphone Masterbuilt acoustic - no cutaway, and an extremely fast neck with super low action... this thing is a dream to play and has a nice low end and a decent high end. I bought this one for recording, it is a great rhythm guitar.

Taylor Baby Taylor - this thing plays nicely and has a really nice tone for a little guitar - bought for hiking/camping, but it turns out when I just want one more piece in a mix this thing can fit nicely... it records really well when I just need that little bit more... it sounds better than recording a full size guitar and then eqing stuff out to make it fit.

Takamine 12-string acoustic, single cutaway - picked this one up at a sale on a whim... I needed a 12-string ["needed" heh heh heh... yeah right] and it's got a good sound but isn't the dream player I would like. It needs some work... one of these days. But it's in cosmetically great condition.

Squire Bullet - Why you say? Because I couldn't bear to install my hideous midi pickup onto one of my gibsons. so this little POS is only used for midi and occasionally a lead on a recording when I need some plink.

Squire P-Bass - I'm not much of a bass player and can borrow a really nice bass when I need too - so I just picked this one up [on sale for $80 clearance down from $300] to write my grooves with. I wax-potted the pickup and re did the wiring with some quality componants I had laying around and it sounds better.

Bacon Banjo Company banjo from the 20's - this is my current restoration project.

Epiphone mandolin - I am getting serious about my mando playing so I am looking at a gibson now.

I think there's more but they aren't coming to mind..

Currently only 3, because I simply can't afford to buy more...

Admira Paloma (Spanish Classical) - My first guitar, nothing else to say.

Ibanez RX ('93) - Have this one for 6 years now. A cheap Ibanez or what's left of it... replaced almost everything, pickups, tuning keys, knobs, wiring... Overall - it's a great "practice guitar", but not more than that.

My latest purchase - ESP, LTD MH-400NT bought it about a month ago, can't get my hands off it. Probably just another "600$ guitar" for most of you, but I just love the way it sounds. I can honestly say that this is one of the best guitars I ever heard (in it's category of course).
