I would recommend the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone with the Keeley mod, but be careful, they tell you not to use it with anything less than a 4x12 cabinet. Really nice item with 3 position selector switch from mild to all out paint peeling, stomach hurting, ear splitting sound. Check it out at www.robertkeeley.com he is Oklahoma and will mod your pedal for around 70 bucks.

Agreed. I own one of those Keeley metal zones and they are terrific at getting a hard-edge metal tone. I posted a clip up here not too long ago of my metal zone...I'll try to dig it up for you.

whoa, that rocked, is this clip of your band or what? I am in the process of getting my MT-2 modded I can't wait. I have a couple friends that have had theirs done and they really impressed me. I just got my amp and as you can see it is a 5150 with a matching cab. I play through either an OD-20 or the MT-2 with an RV-3. It sounds ok but I am looking forward to getting the crunch.

No this is my Boss BR600. The drums were programmed (rather poorly) in Acoustica Beatcraft. The guitar was recorded like this:

Guitar-->Keeley MT-2-->Carvin Legacy-->Palmer PGA-04-->Boss BR600 then USB'd to my computer.

Settings are as follows:
MT-2: Level 12:00, Low 12:00, High 12:00, Mid 9:30, Mid Freq 11:00, Gain maxed
Legacy: Clean channel, eq dimed out with mid backed off just a hair and preamp pushing hard but not wide open.
Palmer: Can't remember off the top of my head but I think everything was in the middle somewhere.

The song itself is Dream Theater's "As I Am" off of their Train of Thought album. I finally decided to learn it since I've been listening to it forever.

Another thing to note is that the Metal Zone, whether it's Keeley modded or not, likes to be double-tracked. That clip was 2 takes, one in the left speaker and one in the right. For some reason, one track by itself sounds kind of bleh.

you might want to consider just geting a good power amp and running your j station thru it into the cab since you allready have a setting or two on your j station that you really like....

He said he has a '92 super lead...that should suffice for a "good power amp" ;)

When he's done with it, maybe he'll give it to me?

Have you considered the LD-1 Landmine distortion pedal? Look it up on google.

The LD-1 might be a good pedal but, you can find the MT-2 almost anywhere, pawnshops, friends and so on. I paid 25 bucks for mine works great and for another 75 getting a Keeley mod that produces an awesome sound at 3 different levels and you can adjust the mid freq. to your taste, not just the mid range, which is where it counts the most. Don't get me wrong but buck for buck the MT-2 is a better buy.

i should have clarified my statement... a "dedicated power amp" like a crown or even a marshal J-MP"... that Marshall has a ton of gain options to work with and it works very well with processors. in this scenario he is looking at a rack mount system as opposed to just running thru a regular guitar amplifier. not that there is anything wrong with the Marshall he has but he IS looking for more gain and the J-MP WILL provide that......just another option....

I have no idea what kind of funds adragonsheart has but sounds as if they want to keep it simple without spending a lot of cash. If they do their homework they will discover there are a lot of options out there, too many, and it can get overwhelming, it did for me. That's why I have what I have, I did my research and for less than 1100 I got my amp, pedals, and so on and got quality items. Dragonsheart, here is the thing you might want to take a look at. Figure out how much you want to spend, what kind of sound you want and run with it. If you have a Guitar Center in your area or another shop see if they will let you come in and test some items, I know GC will. Good hunting.

I had a metalzone but I found it to be harsh and too much emphasis in the middle frequencies , I now use the Marshall guvnor 2, its like adding another amp to your setup.
