The most versitile guitar I can think of is a strat. You can play anything from country to blues to rock. That's a decision that has to be made by you though. A Mex strat is very well made, and won't take you to the poor house. Strats come with single coils, or if you need something a bit thicker sounding you can get one with a humbucker. Ibanez also makes some fine guitars, so does Schecter.

Yea, I agree with Fred. IMHO if your goal is versatility, then get a Fat Strat with HSS pups, or an Ibanez with HSH pups. That should take you far.

As long as your guitar is not a piece of drift wood, I would advise looking into upgrading your pickups and seeing how that works out for you. A nice set of Gibson 57's should do wonders for your guitar. I did this upgrade on my Epi and it now she sings. And it's a cheaper investment if you are on a budget.

Man, I would not change guitars. What kind of sound to you want? The pickups are definitely what I would change. My guitar was only $450, but it is the best thing since sliced bread. If I have to do anything it will be chaning out the pickups, like evol666 is saying. I have thought about putting a chromed humbucker in mine, but I have still been undecided.
