First this is not an us vs them post, the Fender/Gibson debate has been done to death here. This is simply to tell you where I fall and why. When I started on electric I came from the acoustic world and really didn't know much about the electric guitar so when I when out to get one I went for a style of guitar that I liked, a semi hollow body. I played a few and bought the Epiphone Sheraton II in a natural finish, a beautiful guitar that played well. It was disturbing that as long as I owned it I was never satisfied with the sounds I got from the guitar, it just didn't give me what I was looking for. I traded that guitar to my brother for a Fender Nashville Tele that gave me all the sounds I couldn't find on the Epi.

I just got back from Denmark Saturday where a friend of mine sold me a crafted in Japan Fender Strat and now after a couple of days playing the Strat I get the same feeling I got from the Tele. I'm finding new things, my playing has again jumped forward and I couldn't be happier. Yes there is that famous Fender hum but a pickup mod sometime in the future will certainly solve that. So I am a single coil guy because the sound I get from these two guitars is the sound I was looking for. So while an LP may be a great guitar and I would love to have one, my Tele and Strat are giving me the sound I want to play with. By the way my brother makes that Epi sound great and he loves that guitar, it just wasn't for me.

here's the thing. sooner or later, you'll have a les paul to play on for a few days and you will AGAIN discover even more cool sounds and then then you'll want a les paul. it just works out that way. just when you think you have found what you are looking for, along comes something newer, bigger, better and changes your mind completely. bottom line here is that there is no true ONE guitar for anybody. you'll find that you'll want a certain sound for different applications and the G.A.S. will begin all over again. eventually you will move on to the "i need another amp" phase. then it will be a pedal phase and so on. but that's kind of the fun for the whole thing. all the new discoveries that come along. with that said, there are some pretty nice guitars out there that come with a coil tap that you may want to consider looking into. they can give you the best of both worlds in one guitar. very handy.

Don't do that to me bachmirage, I already have G.A.S. bad enough and I know I haven't reached nirvana yet. When I started I really didn't think I would be such a Fender guy. Just reporting on where I'm currently at. But I hope to be done with electrics for a while as I would really like to have a resonator, damn there goes another G.A.S. attack.

I have found that most acoustic players like the clean sound of a fender more than the gibson clean sound when playing electrics. I play 98% of my music in a gibson but when I record I use the Strat for most of the clean sounds.

I've noticed that too. I've been around a lot of players over the years that essentially come from three different camps and that is the acoustic vs electric vs..us, the guys who will play anything..lol. It seems you have the James Taylor types who will tolerate Fenders, especially teles. Then you have the hard rock/heavy metal, double humbucker, Floyd Rose, Dimebag guys. Then there are the GAS guys who want it all which would be most of us. There are exceptions, the jazzy hollow body types, but I've noticed that preferences seem to fall into those three camps.

I'm having trouble with the James Taylor type guy there Fred. I may be at heart an acoustic guy but I'm not sure that James and I are even from the same planet, musically speaking.

lol you forgot one type:

the guys who believe that the only worthy gear is a $12k custom-made guitar and a $15k amp, and also believe that anyone using less worthy gear inherently has "less tone", as if it were something you can measure.

I really hate that type

LOL!!!!

I've seen it many times.

* 15 year old kid asks a question on message board:

Kid: Hi, I'm a beginner. I don't have much money, but I am working odd jobs during summer. I have a beginner's guitar. What amp should I get.?

Another poster: Maybe try a small Line6 or Peavey combo. Those are decent and they're not too expensive.

Gear snob: DON'T BUY SOLID STATE! Save up and buy a tube amp! Tubes are the ONLY way to go. Try an Engl or maybe a Kotsch. Mine costs $4000 and it's worth every penny.

Kid gets discouraged and goes out and buys Guitar Hero for his XBox360.

Yeah I don't get the hum at all on my MIM Tele and only get it on certain settings on the Strat. I'll figure all that out as I go, but just in the day or so that I've had to play the CIJ I like what I got.

Or you could do like I have done. I have an LP AND a Tele and my next guitar purchase will be a strat. Different guitars for different applications. I already knokw what I want. The trouble is just picking ou the color.

I have to agree, 1 guitar just doesn't cut it. I love humbuckers but I still had to have an ax with a good single coil because I just can't get a humbucker as clean and crisp. And no, contrary to what my wife thinks, that isn't just a good excuse to buy more guitars. Their like good potato chips, it's damned hard to stop at just one.

I also seem to have a problem leaving them stock. But I've found that it's easier to explain small packages containing parts and pieces than it is explaining whole new guitars. It's also easier to fudge about how much those little things like pickups and tuners and bridges cost. :) That tends to keep the bitching down to a minimum while still fixing the gear addiction.

Just to let you know that I'm not completely unbalanced here, I do also own a 1985 Ibanez, model unknown, with one pickup, a humbucker, in it. I do like my Ibanez but the Fenders are certainly more fun.
