Believe it or not, I've never switched out the pickups in any of my guitars. I always figured if I needed more gain or tone, I could just adjust my amp or buy a new one. Someone else should explain the merits of switching pickups. I'd like to hear it too...

Switching pickups allows you to make an instrument truly yours by finding a set that sounds exactly the way you want.

I prefer high-output pickups, as I really like the feel of having a guitar "play itself". Dimarzio has always been my favorite; I like the subtle low-midrange they seem to have that gives them that "aw" sound.

Here's my favorite sets from dimarzio, neck-middle-bridge:
Cruiser - Cruiser - Cruiser
Fast Track 1 - Fast Track 1 - Fast Track 2
Chopper - Chopper - Breed
Area '58 - Area '58 - Area '61

the best pickups i've ever heard for a strat were from EMG. the gilmour setup to be exact. check the EMG website for more details.

actually i hear sometimes its how they are wound or even how well they are wired or it what way they are wired.

I'm getting my fralin vh's on a 10-way mod! 5 blender pot vintage single coil tones and flip a switch and 5 more acting as humbuckers..even though i don't have a hiumbucker installed...they are getting combined through the wiring mod i'm getting.

not to sound typical but yeah
dimarzios
Fralin VHs.
Fralin blues
stock 62s
custom shop

they are all good and can all sound different depending on the mod too! Also they can be wound differently i.e. reverse wound etc.

Is it technically challenging to change out pickups?

I have never customised any of my guitars but have always aspired to it.

Does it require any altering of the body,wireing/soldering or do pickups all comply with standard sizes etc because quite frankly I'm a monkey when it comes to anything like that! :-)

well wirig looks easy and it seems easy when your doing it...that's probably because your doing it wrong...i did not do mine correct...my schematic was perfect is was my soldering technique that caused problems i was told. so wiring is not a science..its a dead set skill and art to it...i would start off with a simple deal like a 3way and just take your time...or watch someone first!!!

It requires no altering of the body if you replace them with the same *style* of pickups, i.e. humbuckers with humbuckers, singles with singles, p90's with p90's. You *can* put a single coil in a humbucker rout (my RT650 has this), and some guitars also have a "universal" or "swimming" pool rout to accept almost any pickup configuration.

The size difference is really mostly in the depth. Two different brands of humbuckers may look similar, but one may have longer tabs. Also, I believe EMG single coils can use a smaller rout than standard single coils, if you are rear-routing a body. Outside of that it's a total crap-shoot.

The biggest skills involved are knowing how to solder, and how to read schematics. If you can do that, you can probably do all of your pickup modifications yourself.

Cool - Cheers man. I may have to see if I have the kit to do that at home then.

I have an Epi Les Paul which quite frankly is a really nice guitar but I'm thinking of putting two Bare Knuckle's in it - Either gonna go for a Nail Bomb set or a Nail Bomb at the bridge and a Mississippi Queen P-90 at the neck.

Fralin Vintage hot in the neck and middle and steel pole 43 in the bridge.

Lollars are also pretty cool but completely different..

Danno,

Depending on the kind of strat you have, you could turn it into a fat or double fat strat, or even an HSH configuration. I'm guessing being a copy it probably has a swimming pool rout which will leave it wide open for whatever you want. The only way to tell is to remove the pickguard.

I haven't gotten very far into it aside from strings and messing with the trem. Right now it is HSS (bridge-mid-neck).
Would be interesting to find out though. Maybe there's room for HHH! I don't want to get to far ahead of myself LOL
