Just go out and try some of the major brands. I personally like Ernie Ball and D'Addario.

I really like the Elixir strings. I always buy an extra G though because the one with the set always breaks first.

I really hate rotosound and d'addario.
I use DR on everything...

And you're gonna get at least one reply in favour of each brand. As you can see, Shane loves D'Addario and I hate them. Same will be true for all brands. So there is no rule of thumb here. You try them out till you find one you're happy with.
