I keep hearing about this thing called the red button. A killswitch, that you can install on your guitar, and a neat effect that guitarists like Buckethead use quite often. What exactly is this thing? Where can I find one? And can I install one onto my Les Paul?

you allready have a kill switch. set your neck volume at 0 and set your treble pickup at full. then hit a note and quickly push your toggle switch up and down many times.....that is your kill switch........ala tom morello......

It's a really easy mod if you know basic principles of electronics.

If not, you stand a chance of really chewing up a guitar. I'd say just take it to tech and let them do it. Ask them to let you watch them so you can learn how if you want to.

i do the thing that bach said, but i have had a guitar that i installed a kill switch on...and yes, it is the easiest thing to do, ever..... but you dont need it, in fact, the tom morello way is cooler if you ask me.

All the killswitch is is a button that kills the signal coming from the guitar. It "turns it off" for the duration you have the button pressed.
I'm guessing the name comes from motorcycles/race cars/etc where you press a button that cuts the ignition (killing the engine). The only advantage of having an actual killswitch over doing it tom morello style is that you can still use your neck and bridge pickup's (not having to kill one).
The cat came back the very next day!
