Dude, I am not much of a Flying V fan, but damn, that's cool. I have been gasing for lots of things. From a Large Diaphragm Condenser mic, to a tube preamp, a bass amp, a Boss RE-20, and last but definitely not least is this baby... The Ibanez Euphoria EP-9. It is the first guitar that Steve Vai has his name that doesn't look like a Wanker's guitar. It has a classic look, but also looks as though it could stand next to the future as well.

well...as much as Steve Vai is very flashy both in his technique and his showmanship, if it weren't for the fact he really is as good as he thinks he is and that, however oddball his ideas might be, he plays tastefully - he'd be a wanker.

Now that I've probably enraged many on this site, let me say that I am a Vai fan.

Thing is, how many people out there who own and play Steve Vai's signature guitars can honestly say they measure up to him in terms of skill and style. :)

Steve Vai is a wanker.

He's just a very talented wanker.

PS..... I'm not jealous, I'm just honest. :-)

I think people buy signature guitars not only because of their hero's, but because they are usually bloody good instruments. I mean my JS is the entry model sure, but I haven't found anything that plays better. Its rare to find that 'ONE' that just works and feels so good. Sure it needs better pups, but thats about it.

Signature guitars are coming in for a lot of abuse lately, probably because there seems to be a huge increase in the last two or three years in the amount being made available. How many Dime models were made? 15? 20? Jeeeeez......

I don't knock the quality of the signature models if you're buying a guitar built to the same specs that Satch or whoever plays on stage... My Cort MGM-1 Matt "Guitar" Murphy model was great. I just find it amuzing when I see someone who thinks that having so and so's signature guitar will make THEM a better player.

But there have been a lot of "signature models" out there that are seem like nothing but a cash grab.

You know, the guitar that looks like the endorsee's but it's not exactly the same.... like Zakk Wylde's Epiphone Les Paul models where the tuners are not as good as the ones on his Gibsons and instead of EMG 81 and 85's (active humbuckers) they have a pair of EMG HZ's (a passive humbucker). I've played the Epi models and I've played the Gibson models... there's a slight difference in the feel and a HUGE difference in sound.

Someone mentioned the Dimebag models and how numerous they are. Aren't they all the same 2 or 3 guitars with different finishes and graphics on them? Are they all to the same specs as Dime's real guitars or are some designed to simply look like his guitars in order to make a quick buck off the Dime wannabe that can't afford the high end model?

Well, I won't buy a guitar because I think it will make me better. I have played some signature, "lower end models, and some suck, some are great. Kirk Hammet's less expensive gear is pretty decent. I would like to try out the Nuno Bettencourt amp model from Randall. I loved Nuno's sound. And his tone was one of the most original, at least it was to me.

well, there's a difference in the way some people purchase gear... not saying that you are one of those people who will mindlessly buy whatever some celebrity puts their name on, Frum. Honestly, based on what little I know about you though, you strike me as the type who makes your final decision to buy based on your ears and how comfortable a guitar was to play rather than the name of the guy endorsing the gear.

Personally, when I buy a piece of gear I don't really give much thought to whether it's a signature model. In the case of guitars, I find what's most comfortable to play and then start narrowing it down by the tones the guitar produces. For my amps, I look at whether I like the clean channel first and then move to the distortion. If I happen across a signature model in the process that I really like more than the other stuff, I'll buy it.

I've noticed that I don't always use gear for the playing the styles it's designed for...for example, the Cort Matt "Guitar" Murphy model guitars were designed for a bluesman...I used it primarily for hard rock and metal. My Ibanez offset V I used to have was most definately a metal guitar, and I used for metal. But I also played it in more jazz/blues oriented settings. I looked real out of place jamming with all these jazzers who wouldn't play a V to save their lives; but the guitar was able to pull off tones that suited the style.

What has really been chapping my hide lately, I can't find a damn tube amp that I like. I have tried out quite a number of them, and none of them impress me. I like the clean of a solid state, but when I go to distortion I want a tube sound. the Tube King Pedal is the closest I have come, though, to being able to switch from one to the next. It's been a little unnerving, because the musicians I really love to listen to are usually using tube amps. I go to play through one and the sound just doesn't come out the way I am hearing on the CD, or whatever. I want it to sound distorted and cream kind of like Mastodon, or Santana, but I have not the money for a Mesa. Alas, I am stuck with what I got for now.

the signature stuff, I actually love the look of the Euphoria. If I were to be able to play it, as you say, would be the deciding factor. I just think it's the most non-wankerific guitar anyone has ever stamped their name on. Besides the SRV by Fender, but I am not a Strat man.

I know how you feel about the amp situation. It took me a long time to find an amp that gave me the tones I was looking for. I was looking for something that could deliver cleans along the lines of a Fender and overdriven tones along the lines of a Marshall or Mesa that wouldn't empty my bank account.

I've come across the Traynor YCS50H head and can't wait to bring one home. If you haven't tried one yet Frum, check it out and see what you think.

My wife and I are financially not in the postion to buy it yet thanks to some unexpected expenses arising from our most recent round of home renovations... I had the goal of getting the amp by Christmas time but now it's looking to be more like March at the earliest.

The head and a decent 2x12 will cost a bit less than getting a no frills Marshall head of comparable power. The Traynor YCS50H also has features that not many other 50 watt amps in it's price range have and Traynor has a 2 year UNLIMITED warranty (as quoted on the website "Even If You Break It") for Canada and the United States.

anyone who's been in many of these kind of threads lately probably doesn't need me to repost, but for the newbies or others that just haven't been around lately....

Traynor YCS-50H 50/15 watt head with either a 2x12 or a pair of 1x12's (not settled on the cabs yet)

I just have to wait for my wife to pay off her credit cards and she's buying it fore me since she got her anniversary gift early.

If I get a deal on the amp/cabs then I might just get a condenser mic also.

And it would be nice to get myself a hollowbody electric guitar some day... the Godin 5th Avenue guitars seem nice, also like the Epi Joe Pass and ES-175 models. Some of the Ibanez and Washburn hollowbody guitars are decent too....I would love a Gibson hollowbody but can't justify that much cash.

Leaving aside the Ellis LP to save boring you again about it, if I ever manage to get The Silver Hoard off the ground I'll be chasing a decent gigging amp. Possibly a Hayden MoFo but more likely a Hiwatt HG50 combo. Then I'd take the Fanes out of my 4x12 and swap them for the **** I have in a pair of HH 2x12s. This would give me any setup from the basic combo to a 3/4 stack.
I can dream.

Whoops! Just pulled the plug yesterday but have to wait for them to get it in stock before they send it out (Monday).

Guess I'll have to pick something else to jones after.... maybe an LP BFG. Always liked the soapbar/hb combo on guitars (had an LP Special that was modified for that).

It's never ending with me.

I'm looking at Jap Fenders on ebay. I don't urgently need one but the prices have dropped $200-300 in the last 6 months. Maybe this is the time to buy one, as the economy is starting to pick up and prices will probably go with it.

the Japanese Fender guitars are pretty decent from what I've heard. I know they kick the nuts off the American Fenders of the 80's before CBS sold the company.

The Squier JV series of the early 80's are quite good too and probably a lot cheaper also. They aren't much for collectable guitars yet, but great players instruments because it usually needs nothing more than some new pickups and sometimes new tuners to make it a killer guitar.

Out here those 80s Jap Squiers are already up around $US350-450. There are currently 10-year-old Jap Fenders, Teles and Strats around $US720 (one Strat with Texas Specials got no bids at 720) Compare brand new bottom-end USA Strat $1100+, I think the CIJs look quite good value.

I used to own one of the jap squiers. Paid $150 Canadian, sold it 5 years ago for $300 Canadian... if I was greedy and held out for more cash, I could have gotten as much as $600 Canadian for it since it was all original parts included plus the EMG's I'd installed myself that came with it and it was in excellent condition.

If they are only selling for around $300 to $450 US right now, they've gone down in value.

I've got an MIA Tele in Candy Cola Red sitting on lay-away in my local guitar shop - should have it in about 6-ish weeks!

This time last year, I didn't really care for Teles. But recently, I've really missed my old Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro 24 Hard-tail and started sniffing around for a new trem-less beast. Given that I've been listening to a bunch of country-flavoured stuff recently, almost ironically I picked out this Tele (okay, she's a looker, too!). Crikey - I'm such a dick for discounting them until now!

It's so weird - I've always kinda thought that they look like toys and well, that they're plain fugly. Though now, as I type I have one as my screen saver and peek at it literally every 10 seconds! It's kinda like a 'Shallow Hal' transformation; I'm totally lovin' Teles!

Ideally, I'll be able to add a Nitro-finished butterscotch one (with a black Bakelite pickguard, naturally) to the family at some point - though sadly, my family doesn't grow quite as exponentially as Madonna's!

Asides from my new found Tele-love story, I've also been looking at tube combos. I'd love a Twin (who wouldn't), but realistically, I'm likely to be picking up a Blackstar Series One 45 in the not so distant future! They are lovely little amps; I recommend you try one if you can. Until I'm gigging though, it's Pod X3 Live and headphones for me!

I've been doing my research for months on different speaker cabinets in the hopes of knowing exactly what I want when I go to get my new amp. One thing I'm noticing though is as much as a 2x12 seems like my ideal cabinet, they're hard to come by.

I'm also noticing that although more common then 2x12's that 1x12's aren't that common either...at least not many that seem to be considered of very high quality.

As impractical as a 4x12 is for me, I find they're a dime a dozen and a decent cabinet can be bought for about the same price I had set as my limit for a 2x12.

The problem for me seems to be that nobody around me carries 2x12's that are in the middle price/quality range... they are either super expensive high end cabs, or cheap entry level crap.

So far I've got a few cabs under consideration:

Bugera 2x12 - really inexpensive, probably will eventually want to swap the speakers, no info on what type of wood is used

Traynor - 2x12 - seems to be the most likely because they make quality stuff at a fraction of what Mesa or Marshall or Orange charge for something of similar specs
- 1x12 - all the models offered are 8 ohm, the drawback is that it's cheaper to get the 2x12 than a pair of these. The advantage is that with the head I plan on getting this would be scalable.

Marshall - Haze 1x12's - considering a pair of these, but being 16 ohm cabs I will not have the option of using only 1 cab if space ever becomes an issue
- MC series 2x12 - Marshall's low end cab line...I'd have to test it I guess, but being built for the MG series I don't expect much

Orange 1x12 - depends if they make one that's 8 ohms because I'd have to start off with one and buy the second one later...also, I could buy a 4x12 for what this cabinet will cost

On paper the Traynor cabs seem the best option, if only I could find some of these other cabs locally so I could try them and let my ears make the final decision.

Surprisingly . . . my guitar GAS is nearly gone at the moment. The new Sterling series basses from musicman looks fun (stingray el cheapo) , but I'm concentrating all my $$$$ on a consumer of GASoline. I'm gassing for one of these < http://www.connorsmotorcar.com/67Chevy.html > its $1,750, has a mildly played with 327, 3 speed auto, and needs brake and fuel lines. Tis black with a white grile. Its in decent shape, and from Arizona, so it has minimal rust. I'm looking at 12mpg tops :)

Oh, and its a C-20, so its a 3/4 ton payload instead of 1/2 ton as seen in the link.
