Nearly every guitar forum I've visited has one of its boards designated for "free-for-all" discussion which need not have anything to do with guitars. No one who remembers the old Gcom need be reminded that such boards have a tendency to take over.

In order to combat this, other guitar forums I visit (Ultimate Guitar and Christian Guitar Resources come to mind) don't add to users' post counts for posts on the free-for-all boards. On these sites, post count serves the function Web Cred does here, so keeping free-for-all posts off the post count keeps members from inflating their e-putation with posts about politics, porn, and PC games in a place where guitar is supposed to be the main focus.

Along these same lines, what I was thinking was that Gcom might want to consider disabling Web Cred on the Offbeat forum. It's a small thing, but it could be a little help in the quest to keep something like the old Misc from coming back. Just something to think about.

I respectfully disagree. I've found that if a poster makes a controversial post of a political nature in offbeat, they would get negatives. I know this from experience. To me, that's a deterrance, which is a good thing. It makes the poster think twice about how to phrase their opinions, and whether to make certain types of opinions in the first place. Web creds in offbeat serves to ensure the discussions remain relatively civil. With web creds in place, Offbeat will likely never go the way of the old Misc.

Also, this site is monitored, even though there are no apparent moderators. Get enough negatives and it's "Off The Island." Things seem to be working well up to this point. Why mess with it if it isn't broken?

I must admit, I did not know this. It is true that I have been very impressed with the way these boards are managed so far.

Negatives and post-hiding are good self-moderation.
But I think we all know by now that negatives can also become as sought after as the positives... Instead of earning reputation some people choose to seek notoriousness...

Anyway, don't fix it is it ain't broke is good tactic for now. If offbeat shows signs of slipping off-track, measures can be taken.

i think the offbeat forum is much better than misc used to be. we have had many discussions and the flame wars have been far less common. there is nothing wrong with having disagreements, its all the fighting and other childish stuff that was the problem. now days there isnt nearly as much of that going on. i dont like the idea of offbeat taking over, but i agree with the " if it aint broke " approach because right now i dont see a takeover on the horizon. i hope it stays similar to what it is now.

as far as web cred is concerned, i very rarely give negative. if i like what someone has to say i will give positive, if i dont like it i usually just do nothing.

It's actually "1984" only it's 24 years later. I'm thinking about starting a thread on Billy Mays, (you know, that bearded jerk-off that will sell you anything,) Will he team up with Esteban and try to sell us guitars that you can hang anywhere by pressing one of the tuners into the wall? Now that's offbeat folks.

With the Illuminati controlled state state, this site tries to make people conform in an almost fascist way, in my very humble opinion, it stops people saying exactly what they want, when they want. web cred is a little dull, because somebody who plays guitar like a Mongoloid on meths can have a webcred of over 1000. so its. flawed, thats not to say that most things that go on here arnt interesting, and I must admit some of the arguments people have are entertaining.

I know this is a guitar site - but we all have other interests other then guitar and music - I think offbeat serves a purpose and web cred is no more then a pat on the back telling someone we support what thy are saying. While posting MORE increases your chances of obtaining webcred - it doesn't guarantee it.
