I love that this is coming from a 13-yr old!!! I just thought it was a sign of getting old when you say that you can't get into any new music or that new music sucks. I believe that its technology's fault. It's too easy to mass-produce music, and if you're not in the "key demographic", then a big screw-you to ya!! lol

There are some new bands and music out there that is pretty good. I'm just having a brain fart at the moment and can't think of any.

I've come to the conclusion that things go in cycles. Fads come and go. I can remember when Korn, Limp Biskit, and Pearl Jam were all the rage. Now it's guys in masks and mascara. Tomorrow it could be jock straps and duct tape, goodness knows what the guys will be wearing 8-)

There's loads of good music out there, it's just getting harder and harder to find. Record companies are consolidating on their high-selling (= mainstream) artists and cutting edge people are abandoning record companies for independent releasing as it's now the most viable financial model.

The problem is that if it's the record company that has the wherewithall to pay for advertising, all you're going to see is the mainstream unless you take the time to go underground.

My opinion is that the industry is in a state of flux. Someone has to figure out how to give visibility to independent talent. New technology is running ahead of the market.

Blame MTV :-) Good idea to start with, but now talent plays second fiddle to marketable image.

You want to find talent? Spend a week on mySpace. You'll find really good bands that no-one has ever heard of (or ever will).

Alternatively, find and start listening to inde podcasts.

Whoever figures out how to work the new technology and get decent music to the masses is going to make a fortune... but will also be starting the cycle over again.

I don't know what you consider good music but yeah there is plenty of good music there is always good new music but part of the fun and expense is finding it, not always so easily done.

I look for bands that are doing things a bit against the grain. I'm still in my dream theater phase, but they're just plain awesome. Other bands I've been listening to:

Arch Enemy - They have a chick singer! And she's hot! Not to mention the guitars are really freakin' good. Michael and Christopher Amott are killer!

Tool - Of course, nothing new from them. But I do find myself listening to their stuff more and more. It really stretches the brain.

My Chemical Romance - No, I'm not an Emo Kid. But their Black Parade album is actually pretty good. The guitars aren't that great, but it's the orchestation of them that I like. It reminds me so much of Queen that it's not funny.

Disturbed - Man...I love this band. They have definitely gone more mainstream, but in their case, that's a good thing. Bringing heavy to the masses!

Good music is definitely out there. But like the others have said, it's on the internet, and you have to search for it. The really great bands aren't hard to find, people like me need to get more internet savvy. I resent that some of the bands listed above don't get better exposure. They really should! If the TV networks want to save the ratings that they are currently losing so badly, they may want to put real actors and musicians back on, pay them what they are obviously worth, and stop this reality tv crap.

We get some really good stuff in the studio. National or international exposure is really the problem. There's TONS of good stuff out there. Like has been said, however, finding it is the problem. Not so much a problem as it's just not like it used to be. The best of the best were signed to record contracts and all that advertising made them household names. Hell, I bet all us "old folks" can name at least 5 one hit wonders who never came out with anything decent after their first big strike.

While I still enjoy listening to all the "old" stuff, most of my current listening is studio cuts.

Realize that I engage more in music appreciation than in music criticism. Anyone going to the studio is "appreciated" no matter how their music sounds. Getting off your duff and paying someone else to record and produce your ideas, (or doing it yourself, if you have the time, skill, gear and knowledge,) is ALWAYS appreciated.

It's not that there's no one trying to get good music into your hands, it's that getting it there is no longer a matter of perusing the "record" store to find out what's new.

MySpace is loaded with talent, and hacks. It's up to you to determine the difference.
