Ok everyone it's that time again. For those who can, please join in on this! it'll be fun!

I recorded a simple little backing track just now, and it's wide open for improvisation. This is the section to solo over, and it's very loop-able, so we can have as many on board as we want. My brother is currently taking care of the drums for me, so we can expect it whenever he's done. For now, it's just a click track :(

Anydangway, here's the backing:

http://www.netmusicians.org/files/43-GCOmJamNOSOLO.mp3

It's in Cm, 70 / 140 bpm. Whichever you prefer ;)

doesn't matter ;) It's a looped rhythm anyway. I'll just go ahead and call this one "first come, first serve". (i.e., I'll mix them in the order I receive them :-P)

BTW, wav is preferred, but mp3 is easier to up/download. PM me when you've got your take and I'll reply with my email. I just don't like putting it out in the open on message boards...

he's really a nice guy....he's no douche bag. in his defense he's got a new job with crazy hours, going through a divorce and when we practice he doesn't have time to just play stuff for fun so i think when he said that he was being moody..i mean the guy turned me on to tool (which i really dig) so he can't hate metal all that much...he wants us to finish our album so i kind of understand why he said that but it is kinda narrow-minded thing to blurt out...we all sometimes in the heat of a moment say things we don't mean. we have never in the 15 years we've been playing together ever wanted to play anything really heavy...i always did that on my own...i gotta ask you though. do you like to mix things up and play differednt styles? Some metal players just play metal. that's just as narrow minded. I like playing everything....jazz/blues hard rock rock fusion..experimental...hmm actually i'm not into country but i respect it.

lol gotta love narrow-mindedness. Tell him it's hard acid fusion ;)

My brother usually comes through. He's working at a haunted house tonight though so it may be later this weekend before we hear anything. I have the means to do it, but I pretty much suck at laying down drums.

I was working with it last night, but I want to change the guitar effects. I went for 90's metal, but I sounds really muddy no matter what I do, so I'm going to change the setting to something else. I'll be out for the rest of the day, but I'll go at it again when I come home tonight. BTW, Shane you sound awsome!

@joba:

I replied in an email, but just in case:

Can you send it without the backing track behind it? as in just the solo by itself. It's easier to mix in that way. As it is, it'll get drowned out when the backing track I have gets combined with the one that's stuck in the background of the one you sent.

that's not a problem, because I only posted the solo section...basically it'll be stringing a bunch of these together with various breaks between every second or third one.

Also, by limiting the time, it forces you to think outside the box...while stuck inside of one ;) I think though, that once you start playing, you'll find that 1.5 minutes is a very long space to fill up. I also think the nature of the song is implying a more melodic solo (I was trying to channel Michael Amott / Steve Vai on this one...), hence my interpretation, but that's just mine. I'm excited to see what everyone else comes up with.

OK here's the way it's coming together:

cool sound FX intro piece (hindu chants?)
solo1
solo2
solo3
break (something simple)
solo4
solo5
solo6
another simple break
...ad infinitum

Again, I'm just throwing them in the order I receive them. I'll clean up whatever I can to make it as polished as possible, but I'm no studio engineer.

Also, something cool came from our last jam that never came together

This is the 'Nova Scotia' jam info from Soundclick.com:

"» highest in charts: # 463 (158,361 songs currently listed in Rock)
» highest in sub-genre: # 60 (14,535 songs currently listed in Rock > Progressive Rock) "

i think 60 out of 14,000 = a winner ;)

Not really. New songs get a spot in the light when they are published. You know, show on top of the "what's new" type of list. Some people watch those lists for new stuff so a new song may score a bunch of hits in a day making for high average plays per day. And then they decay. Maintaining a high position means people keep listening to the song and that's what counts.

PS: again, record your solo using the backing track, and then send me *just* the solo track without the backing mixed in. I don't even need a click track (unless you want to give a 2 to 3 beat count-in). Just the solo itself. I don't need the backing again...I already have about 20 copies :-P

yeah...i used to use my prs through it and you'd think that would've been a good combo but it wasn't. i also replaced the tubes with mesa 6l6s...that made a huge different then the stock el34s they come with. so it was i guess the combination of tube changing and a good strat.

yeah, the vht's peaked my interest for sure....i used to read about them all the time..the low watt ones? i can't find anywhere to play them though...

on the legacy the 2nd channel is still dark/muddy with chords (i think its the eq) but the first channel is pretty nice. the line out is nice to have too...i can't tell the difference from the amp and the recorded sound. they did some things right on that amp for sure. i guess the second chanel sounds good wit a jem. i used to have a jem but never at the same time as this amp.

I don't know...I put evolutions in my RG, which is damn near a jem (at least as close as i'll get for under a grand), and it was still muddy. It was hotter, and the sound seemed to burn rather than cut, but it still had a tubby low end.

Here's a clip from that rig:
http://www.netmusicians.org/files/51-LegacyMetal.mp3

I had the treble dimed, and I was running it through my Palmer PDI-03 with the bright switch on. VERY dark...I like the richness, but I want something with a bit more bite to it.

the track didn't sound bad to me...i liked that second part...haven't heard that in a while. but yeah, the second channel on the legacy are still dark and muddy with the rythymns any way you slice it but what did you think of the clean channel? you can put a nice tube screamer in front of it and its has a nice classic tone that works with strats. ten fold with the new tubes..it seems as though a strong advantage of tube amps is the ability to mix the tone...Of course for hard rock/metal the legacy as a power amp over drive the amps channel two is no where near other amps...especially for the metal sound which i actually may now start playing a little.... i lost that metal edge by playing fusion stuff...its always good to mix it up every now and again. you definately have it down.

i got to ask you and i gotta know..what did you use on this track we are playing with and did you slightly use a wah pedal on the lead at all cause i thought i heard it on a note or two but maybe not. maybe it was just the signal from the bend but it sounded like it just at the beginning of your solo.

Also on the rythymn track is that the same rig...very fat, balsy yet compressed o.d. sound in the powerchords you were hitting. Same amp?

Yeah it's all the same rig...just a pod 2.0 into a Boss BR600. A very lowly setup. There's actually no post-EQ or anything done to it...it's all raw pod. I have to say here that I don't particularly like using the pod...I prefer the real thing when I can get it. But for ditties like this it's perfect.

The lead is the "rectified" setting, with bass at noon, mids at 7-8, and highs dimed. The gain is maxed, but the boost isn't engaged, so it's still a higher-medium gain setting. I also used a slight compression (2:1, I think) and a delay, both also from the pod. The speaker is a line6 4x12 sim, again, built into the pod. You have good ears on the wah...I did use my Morley Tremonti wah for the first part.

The rhythm is pretty similar, only the gain was backed down to around noonish, and there were no effects other than the speaker sim. I did two takes, one for the left channel and one for the right channel, each panned 100% let or right.

In both cases, the guitar was my RG2EX1 with Dimarzio D Activators. I absolutely love that thing!

The bass is my SRX390, into the pod's "tube preamp" setting. Since the bass is active, I set everything to noon (I think gain was slightly less than noon) and used the bass preamp to set the sound.

Drums were all programmed in Acoustica Beatcraft. I used the standard rock and blues set that came with the program.

The legacy had an amazing clean channel. There are only a few amps I'd put above it: Mesa Lonestar Classic and a vintage blackface twin. I did love to put my tubescreamer (I have a keeley modded TS-9 plus) in front of it. It was very pedal friendly.

As far as losing the edge...yeah i come from mainly a blues and rock background, just recently getting into the harder stuff. I was the guitarist for my college jazz ensemble for 4 years, so i could probably still cop some fusion-y licks. Lately i've been studying Paul Gilbert's techniques a lot, in fact I borrowed one of his string skipping licks in my solo for this (the first fast part after all the bends). He's also why I sold my tremolo-equipped RG and bought a hardtail...the tuning stability was the biggest payoff, although now without a tremolo to play with I have to really think outside the box while stuck inside of one :-P.

One of these days, I'm going to grab either a VHT or an Engl Fireball. Then I'll have some half-decent guitar sounds to play with. When my sansamp RBI comes in after that for the bass....it'll really be on then. I'm going to start cranking out the tunes as much as I can.

well your hard rock licks are nice...

Oh yeah i think i remember you telling me you liked the clean channel? was that you?

That makes sense that you were using a pod..i had i think it was the first one..the red rack mount few years back..it was really good for recording purposes. some people i heard actually put the pod in front of another power amp in a live setting...

does that morley have true bi pass? how do you like it..i've gone through two the last being the steve vai wah/expression..it was decent and interesting in the fact that when its pulled back its completely off and in true bu pass mode but i took it back to the store because there as a slight delay (1 sec) from true bi-pass to the on position or maybe it was vice versa but i really couldn't stand that so i took it back to the store for a delay pedal...i would like to find a nice wah or expression that has true bipass (wah pedal really mess up your tone when they are off) and sounds good for leads so i am curious.

if you get your vht put some Sovtek tubes in them. I hear they really work well with that amp..well they are good in most amps...i really investigated the vht in forums etc...only heard clips and never played one for real but it seems like an amazing amp. i think i'd prefer that over an engl from what i've heard. I played engls...nice drive i guess but i hear the vhts are monsters and they have a good clean too. i want to get a fuchs ods or a glasswerks one day...i may get one through Scott Lerner or something..this stuff gets expensive doesn't it? I've put oput 15k in my studio and equipment and what i'm still looking to get a few more things.

fyi i have the keeley mod too..ts-808 though..sounds great don't they? as if the stock wasn't good enough...i'm getting another one..for back up and i'm curious what it would sound l;ike if you used one for just a boost and the other for o.d. it might be the way to go..not sure.

Actually on that exact pedal you had, there's a "dwell" potentiometer inside the unit that determines how long that on/off delay is. I adjusted mine as short as it can go.

I've already tried sovtek tubes and they are nice, but EH is my favorite for a long time now. I've had the least issues using those, and they seem to make every amp I put them in open up.

Yeah the keeley pretty much rocks. There's another TS-like pedal I have though that i like more for some situations: Maxon ROD-880. It's like a TS with a tube. It's really sweet.

As far as the wah messing up my tone...I really just adjust around it. Enough pros have wahs inline with their setups that I figure I can do it and get away with it too. I don't know if the Tremonti is true-bypass or not, but I've never really been pickup about bypass anyway. Especially since I now use a midi pedal controller (gcx ground control pro). It takes them completely out of the chain anyway, so bypass isn't a factor anymore.

How are you recording it? You can record it against the backing, but you can't select the solo by itself? Most recording setups I can think of would force you to have a separate track for your solo...

I can try to make it happen, but it just won't sound as good. You'll probably barely be able to hear the solo at all.

Well, the problem really is that I don't have a direct input from my guitar to the computer. I set up a wide range mike and record. It really messes up the recording quality, but it's all I've got. I use Wavepad to record. Usually it's ok, but the problem is that it can't limit the time of your recording to that of another. So, when I record with something, either the synchronization between the bt and my guitar gets messed up, or the 2 tracks get automatically mixed. I have no idea what to do...

Siddp,

download Audacity (it's free): http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
Record using headphones to minimize the sound that your mic picks up
Export your solo track as an mp3 file, and mail it to me

I can take care of lining things up when it gets to me...I just need to know where the downbeat starts ;)

Awesome! You're not a van halen fan by any chance, are you?

BTW, something strange happened with yours. It's slowed down by about 2-3 bpm. No worries...I'm going to use a beat counter on it to speed it back up where it needs to be. I'm guess it's just MP3 compression / decompression that did it.

I knocked out the first half of the song. I don't think I'm going to play anything over the break. I'll do the second half tomorrow night after I get home from work. Then I'll send you both files zipped via gmail Shane. I did the best I could with it, but I'm not even in the same ball park with most of you guys. Hell I'm not even in the same area code..lol. It's good experience though.

Oh! What's all this rush for? I have nearly figured out what I mean to play but I could use some practice time with it before attempting to record... Unlike some of you guys, things don't just flow out of my fingers. I have to spend time to come up with layout ideas and then I need time for my fingers to get used to these ideas... I'm sure I have said it many times that I never practice for the sake of practice. I only pick up the guitar when I have something to play.

No rush...we have plenty of time...the only deadline is when people stop sending me stuff :-P

I think I'm going to post the finished product after 6 solos, that way we have 2 sections of three + intro, interlude, and finale.
The good news is that because it's a loop, if someone wants to add theirs later on, it'll drop right in.

OK first three solos are in place. I'm about to post 'em in hopes that it might inspire some more to jump on this.

And here it is so far:
1) me
2) leif
3) jtc

Now I've gotta come up with some kind of interlude-ish part :-/

I have a track that I just want to get rid of. I played the first part, stopped it at that point, then began to record from that point forward. I was able to erase the second part, but it keeps the first part which I want to get rid of as well. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's like this..

Track 3: Begin recording---------------Stop/continue recording----------end. It allows me to kill the second half, but not the first. This might fall under "erasing the repeated portion (AB)" section in my manual. I wish I had time to fool with it but I have to get to work now. I'll look at it when I get home about 1am.

Here's my take. It took me about 3 takes and 15 minutes to record it and then about 2 and a half hours to try and figure out how to mix it and put it on my CPU. I initially liked it after playing it back, but it now seems not to be keeping with the style of everybody else. If I have some time, I'll redo it, otherwise I'll just separate it and send it later. But for now, to the library. Life sucks.

"but it now seems not to be keeping with the style of everybody else"

That's part of the magic of jam sessions ;)

I wouldn't worry about matching everyone else's style...heck between the 3 of us so far there's an insanely wide gap tone and style wise. But it's all cool and it'll all get thrown in there.

I'm refraining from listening to your takes until I have sent my track. Tomorrow is going to be a long day for me... I foresee endless hours trying to lay down a half-decent take of what I have in mind. I'm hoping for a change to record it all in one take rather than in parts like I usually do but it's a tough one.

I never did get a good recording I was completely happy with. I'm just too impatient and was anxious to get my piece sent in.
I'm willing to re-record if necessary. I totally love collabs. I'm glad you guys are spinning this stuff up again.

I'll try a few more takes. If I capture a better one I'll send it your way. (No one is ever satisfied with their own playing-especially me)

I kind of got the hint of a little bit of a sync issue on my cut when listening to the 3-solo mix. I couldn't tell if my track was a few ms early or late but in the section where it changes to C I hear it. Aligning tracks is a typical issue when everyone is recording with different gear. If I send another cut I'll include two bars of the leading drums so you can tell if the tracks are lined up tight or not.

I think part of the problem is me...I just remembered last night I tried speeding up the rhythm 10bpm to see if it sounded better. ;-P

If I'm using that same file, that would explain a lot.

post post post! I've not always been happy with my submissions. And not everyone's submissions are up to par with Zombre's etc, BUT it is worth it for the experience. Plus it's so much cooler when you can associate some music with the web-name of the people you spend so much time with.
