I just realized something a couple of days ago. Jazz takes the most from a guitarist. To play and especially to write anything thats jazz, you have to
have a lot of theory memorized. The jazz players are the ones that can tell you about just about any scale, chord, or progression. They know their stuff. I dig it.

Not only that, they're no where near as anal as other genre players. We LOVE getting jazz cats in the studio. Unless it's something glaring, they just don't make mistakes. If you hear something that doesn't appear to sound right and ask them, the usual reply is, "It's jazz!" They zip through sessions and play like it's second nature and rarely do you hear, "Wait a minute! I screwed that up!"

Gotta love it.

That's what I miss about playing in jazz groups. There's a tightness when it comes to musicianship, but a completely loose feel when it comes to attitudes. Rarely do you have ego issues, and almost always you have an insane amount of fun.

The last jazz band I heard were great untill the 2nd guitarist did a solo using chorus flange and wha, I could not beleive what I was hearing. it was like a dog screwing a hedgehog. nasty sounding stuff. but the other guitarist was flawless.

Wow, my experince has been different. I decided to dive into jazz to build up my chops and knowlege, and when I started having conversations with a few jazz players, I encountered a smugness when I revealed I'm a metal player. It was a big turnoff.

Snobs man, F**K EM ;-). some people that play jazz are like some of those people you encounter in the IT world, if you get my drift. not that I'm anti jazz cause I love some of it. but there is an element of snobbery, its like some classical musicians compared to rock musos. they didn't even acknowledge the electric guitar as a real instrument in the 60's in England...
HAHAHA.....

Playing rock is very hard because of the jazz derivitives that have crept into it over the years. 3nps,modes etc.

Just the opposite here. I find the greater majority of TRUE jazz players quite open to almost anything.

When you write songs, like my Christmas favorite "Waitin' for the Man With the Bag," you can't be all bad!

There are "snobs" everywhere so don't just think it's jazz players. They probably thought you should have been a blues guy dc. You know... "Goin' down town gonna see my gal, gonna sing her a song, gonna show her my ding dong." They were just probably shocked that there was a black metal guitarist in the world.

Xark, I do find that amusing. I'm a middle-aged black guy who works in the IT world, so I head to the music store after work and start playing extreme metal. The looks I get..... LOL!!!
