we are all familiar with "one hit wonders". i can think of a few that were really good songs and it puzzles me as to why the band responsible for it never had another hit. some of them were obviously talented and capable of producing several hits, but for whatever reason they didnt. the ones that come to mind for me are:

cover of the rolling stone - dr hook
keep your hands to yourself - georgia sattelites
all right now - free

which ones stand out for you?

In some cases it's bad management or band break ups ( free, moby grape (classic example), etc) the "usual" causes.

Omaha (love that song to this day).

In others the "one hit" was the art of right place right time and not because of the player, etc (Knack, etc).

The one that comes to mind with me is Jenny from Tommy Tutone (867-5309). It was big when I was in high school.

And as for Free and "All Right Now", they evolved into Bad Company and had a few more hits.

Free had a really good tune called "Love is like Oxygen"
Greg Ginn Band - The Breakup Song (they don't write like that anymore)
The Knack - My Sharona
Shannon - Let The Music Play
Faith No More - Epic
The Vapors - Turning Japanese
Gary Neuman - Cars

"The Vapors - Turning Japanese "

You know.. I was going to say that but I didn't know who (if anyone) would have known it.

Kinda like "Future's so bright (I gotta wear shades)"

Have to disagree on Dr. Hook. Sylvia's Mother was a hit for them as well. ("Lookin' For Pussy," was not.) Most of what they performed they didn't write in the first place. About 99% of their songs were written by Shel Silverstein, (including "Cover of the Rolling Stone.")

Zager & Evans - 2525
Don McLean - (OK, so he was a 2 hit wonder...) "American Pie" and "Vincent"

2525, that's a really good tune. I downloaded it from walmart.com. Last night, I was watch one of those Time-Life infomercials for their Hippie music CDs. Thet has a short video clip of Zager and Evans playing it.

One hit wonders...Mandy Moore "Candy"...I heard her do a blues-y version of it and it was WAY better than the original. The reason she hasn't had more hits is because she decided not to be like Britney Spears and all those other cookie cutter pop princesses and make music with substance. Mandy Moore is a surprisingly talented songwriter.

And......

Flock of Seagulls "I Ran"
Lipps, Inc. "Funkytown"
Devo "Whip It"
Dee-Lite "The Groove is in the Heart"
Billy Ray Cyrus "Achy Breaky Heart"
Luniz "I Got Five On It"

Sweet.

I wouldn't think DEVO would be a one-hit-wonder band. They had a bunch of popular tunes, Jocko-Homo (Are we not men, we are DEVO), and Girluwant to name a couple.

and as a bit of trivia regarding DEVO, the Mothersbaugh brothers went on to do the soundtrack for the Nick cartoons Rugrats.

.....more trivia, what very popular metal band did the soundtrack to one of the Spongebob Squarepants episodes?
