Of course rap is music. This is actually a silly question. Though, from what I gather, many opinions here toward rap is probably what Mozart would think if he heard rock, but that's irrelevant. I love good rap, but most of what is on the radio is awful. Same with rock and country, though. Most rock on the radio is shit, just as most country on the radio is shit. /tangent

What is a concrete definition of music?

Is tribal music music? Is stomping and brooming music? Is jazz music? In most definition-attempts of music you'll probably find it involves human-caused sounds that conform to a rythm of one sort or another (even if jazz often challenges that). So yeah, rap has to go under music too.

I personnally think the beastie boys are the ultimate Rock/Rap artists.

Love their songs and I actually think they harmonize their voices really well - in a rap kind of way.

Plus, they can play instruments when it's required.

We get it in the studio sometimes. Easiest recording sessions EVER! Is it music? Yes. Do we like it? No. It is, however, a form of musical expression and has a pretty big market as well. From a money point of view, it's big music. From a personal point of view, it's become stale and ordinary and isn't evolving.

I'm not out to start a new tread but I find it interesting that Xark doesn't feel Rap is evolving. Now I may be wrong (and please correct me if I am) but wasn't Hip Hop an evolution of Rap and it has influenced music at a lot of levels and continues to evolve. So to hear someone say that Rap has stopped evolving makes me wonder where the master of the form is that will move it forward again because it will need to move forward and sooner or later will. Rap can possible trace its roots back to ancient storytelling and has now arrive as nothing more than American street music. The Blues of its day if you will.

Well, it's perspective. We certainly don't have "cutting edge" rap artists coming to the studio, but we have found that it's usually the unknowns that change things up and push a genre to evolve. All we're hearing is the same old crap. Same old beats. Same old story line. Sure, hip hop is an evolution of sorts, but even that is kind of stagnant in my view. Just wait a few years and there will be something new that sucks too. Being more into the music than the lyrics, rap and hip hop are just the same old thing over and over again.

Guess you have to be really into it to tell the difference.

Basically, the popular producers are all about producing new beats. It's all about the beats, and the flow. Other than that, it's the same old tired story: Look at all the money I got, the women I got, the cars I got, don't you wish you were me? I suppose the ones you're getting are small time up-and-comers, so they talk about all the money they're going to get, the women they're going to get, and the cars they're going to get.

Well.. I gotta say rap is a way of art and music, even though I don't like it at all.
Whistling is music, birds singing is music.. the wind blowing is music. Knocking on a door is music. (Knocking on Heaven's Door is Music too!)
Music is everywhere!

well i used to be heavily into rap music, but also got to kno the inner side of rap. so, summing up an extremely long story, in my life, i found that the music itself isnt so bad (i dont really love it, but i cant say its shit), but the stupid side of it that i hate is the whole rap environment. some individuals are really into the whole gangster thing, as was i, and its such a bad thing, people getting shot, raped, and im not saying that rap gave birth to this, but some rap encourages it, or even finds it amusing. i just hate that environment, which is partly why i got sick of the stupid blindness of that old life, and opened my eyes.
SO, as for the MUSIC of rap, some isnt too bad.
BUT, as for some of the shit it encourages and environment it creates, is just disgusting

As a musical style, I like rap, but like Sawa_Rhythm indicated, I hate the hip hop culture. And since hip hop is central to rap, I stopped listening to it. Well most of it, like 98% of it. And since hip hop has infiltrated into the NBA, I stopped watching pro basketball too.
