Black Sabbath for sure.

You also have to look at the rock bands that helped pave the way - Cream, Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, ect.

There ya go. That would have been my pick. SInce you took it, I'll add the only other one I can think of from that same era... Deep Purple, (already mentioned,) though they were FAR from metal on their first album, Shades of Deep Purple.

Just kidding. Black Sabbath is the band that opened up the metal era there were a lot of bands that formed the foundation that Sabbath stood on but they were the first to put it all together

Bo Diddley- one of the first, if not the first person to frequently use distortion

Distortion was "invented" by John Lennon. He chained a few preamps together in the studio, overdriving each to the next and distortion was born. (The studio engineers were going nuts because he was using their gear in a way it was not intended to be used.) The simple addition of distortion to guitar does not just automatically make the music "metal."

But then what would metal be without distortion? So, if that's a requirement, then you'll need to look to John Lennon as the guy who actually "started" it.

Actually, the first distortion amps were ripped speaker cones, and knocked out vaccum tubes. I've heard this attributed to a number of folks including Ike Turner, Paul Burlison, Dave Davies, Link Wray & Charlie Christian ( in terms of true overdirve). Ron Benson took this idea and had adjustable tubes in his Benson amps that could produce some sweet distortion. We're talking 1944-1956, with 56 being the latest (in terms of recorded evidence.)

Yeah, I have to say the Who to some extent but I'd say Black Sabbath is the mian key to introducing the world to metal

Yea Black Sabbath is definitely the main band for three reasons:1. Tony Iommi was probably the first person to figure out that you could tune down and get a heaver sound.2. He also used the "devil's note" and played faster than the norm for his era.3. Ozzy wrote lyrics about satan and heaven and hell which was very controversial at the time

The "Devils note" is just a tritone. That goes WAY back to gregorian chant....

But Metal as a genre has less to do with speed as such, and a lot more to do with the anger, and subject matter as you suggest....
