Never figured length had much to do with anything at all. Not much difference between knowing one 25 minute song and 5, 5 minute songs you play one after the other.

So, excluding medleys I've put together over the years, the "longest" song I know would also be a Floyd tune. My own version of "Mother" lasts about 8 minutes. Because I added a full intro and lengthened the solo section in the middle.

Isn't the full original album version of Iron Butterfly's "Inagaddavida" like over 30 minutes? I think it has like a 15 minute drum solo. I don't know, I can't really remember. It's been awhile since i have heard it. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is probably the longest song I will actually listen to in it's entirety.

Do concept albums were one song blends into the next one in a way they are all chapters of the same song count?

I don't keep scores of song duration. Anyway, when we talk lengthy I think of Pink Floyd indeed and Zeppelin (medleys).

Deep Purple: Concerto for group and orchestra. All parts together is pretty long too.

Well, if we're just going for what you've heard...

Beethoven's 3rd was pretty long if I remember right. Though it's probably not fair to consider a symphony as a single "song."

No, probably not. I thought about classical music too, but it doesn't fit under the "song" label.

Some people consider their car's engine sound as music. :P That can surely outlast all of conventional music.

OK... Had to make a check...

According to Guinness Book of World Records, the longest symphony, Victory at Sea by Richard Rodgers, is 13 hours long!

well i listen to quite alot of symphony too. dont know if i'd consider it as a song. though it is still a created masterpiece of music.
so i guess it does count as a song.

as for the song blends, i dont think it can be considered as a long song, since its still different pieces of music.
though i may be wrong

A medley has connecting parts so the individual songs flow together. It's played as a single song, but being individually created, I would say it doesn't count any more than say, practicing without stopping for an hour or two.

So how exactly does one perform the Victory at Sea? Which musician can play that long and who the hell can stay and listen to it that long???

Does a stripped vinyl disk count? The Beatles added some junk at the end of the Sgt.Pepper's album (in the cd it is tied to the last song) so that it would play endlessly on some turntables. This thing can play as long as the turntable has power although I do question its musicality.

All tricks aside, (and a good question about who the hell could perform Victory At Sea, though I would expect it would be a tag-team match between symphony orchestras,) I would have to say Shine On... also falls in this catagory. It's in several parts, so isn't actually 25 minutes long, unless YOU put it all together. Like Brick in the Wall. I just don't see where you can count a "reprise" as part of the original song length. The "loop" at the end of Peppers would be a simple trick and because it doesn't change I wouldn't call it a song, just a loop.

Jethro Tull did two full length single song lp's Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. Brick is more acoustical in nature while Passion Play is the more electric of the two. Both of these are excellent in my opinion but I am a huge fan of Ian Anderson's.
