The first vid they played "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. Embedded is a vid of them playing the same song 25 years later. The links gives the entire line up for MTV's first day live.

yeah, in 26 years they have done alot. firts they brought about this thing we call music video. got it started and it gained huge popularity. the music vid was big to say the least. then they captured a following that was so big it shaped pop culture as we knew it. massive success. as a kid, i remember watching mtv daily and loving it. there was so much good music, and it was entertaining with its combination of performance footage and hot girls. then in the 90's it began its decline. it all took a path that would eventually make it become completely worthless as far as music is concerned. now days it is anything and everything EXCEPT music. kinda makes me wonder why in the hell they even call it music television anymore. several others have tried to carry the torch in its place. vh1, ect. are ok but none of them are quite as good as mtv used to be. they have totally abandoned the things that made them so popular. they now have so many rap videos, corny game shows, fake dating shows and gay/lesbian reality shows, that i guess there just isnt time for any real music. what a damn shame.

I'm with you, they've strayed from their once cool and indie vibe. But I guess they put on what sells right?

A good deal of musicians now in their 50's and 60's credit their musical education to the radio. People in their mid twenties to forties attribute a fair amount of their growth with pop and rock music through MTV. For me at least, it personalized my relationship with whatever bands I was really into. Seeing them in mock live performances or acting roles in their videos was way cool for me. I wish I had the internet in it's current form when I was 13 or 14. Pubescent musical cats in this day and age have it made.

I enjoy skinny skiing, heckling figure skaters, flamenco guitar, the blue stuff you put your combs in, good drummers, focaccia bread and coffee out of a french press
