Well, this is news from me, anyway. I just started playing with a band. It's a church band. We have an 84 year old steel guitarist, who plays a Hawaiian style, a lady who finger plucks the bass like nobodies business, a drummer who has the ability to rock and roll, jazz and country anything, and then we have back up singers, in a Church! I have been using my acoustic/electric, and it's been fairly rewarding. No one shows up f'd up, and everyone works well together. I did not know that church music was so complicated, as far as chords, and scales. What are your thoughts? Anyone. The church is fairly unjudgemental, thus far. I am not religious, but they invited me to play despite that fact. I told the pastor straight up when I started that I don't know how long I will do this, but that I would give it my best musicianship, and he told me that was fine. He did not try and convince me of anything, he just accepted me as I am.

Gospel music is cool. My parents are devout churchgoers and when I'm at their home, I bang out some songs on the piano from their hymn book. It's usually very simple stuff because it's designed for an amateur choir sing-along, but you might be playing something different. But yeah, gospel musicians can be good. Depends. Some of the African-American gospel bands can play their ass off.

I like the fact that you described this as a funny mixture of odd people-types, ages and styles. Think of how many music groups are put together for looks, or because they're all similar, or some other dumb reason. If a church throws its doors wide open and anyone can come, then shouldn't the music kinda reflect that? I like the idea that people with disparate life-experiences, styles, and outlooks can join together to make music for a higher purpose.

Well, I never knew there were so many 7th and minor 7th chords in church music. Yeah, Hippieway, so far, it's been great. We played this song, that's basically a 7 minute, fast tempo, clap your hands, stomp your feet kind of groove, and we have nailed it the three times we have played it. It's a conglomeration of different tunes, and they used to play it 35 years ago when the church started. We are going to play it for the anniversary coming up. It'll be fun.

Christian Contemporary music is becoming more and more popular. Some of the musicians in my church have said that it is allot harder to play than good old rock and roll. More power to you. Enjoy yourself.

"So I finally came to terms with my own idea of God, and BAM, I'm in a church band." . . . Sweet, thats the good stuff right there. I'm not in a church band anymore, because the situation with the band expectations was a little different, and i didn't feel right proclaiming things i wasn't sure of, or was totally unsure of, as truth. I really just wanted to praise god. Instead . . . stuff got all preachy, all the time. Yeah, I know, its supposed to be preachy, but not during what is called "WORSHIP" . . . eh . . . maybe someday I'll join up again.

I guess it depends on the music played in the church. I've heard everything from awesome to dreadful taste in church music. Catholic and gospel music are fun in moderate amounts. On the other hand I've been at a pentacostal church for a wedding and god it was horrible. I was torn between bursting into laughter and running the hell out. And orthodox "music" is mostly just boring.

Gospel music is a broad term. Pachelbel's Canon and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy are two of the greatest songs ever and could be considered gospel although I don't think either were intended to be played for a congregation per se.

"Blow the Trumpet for Zion." We played that this weekend and I really love it. I want to actually play my acoustic and sing it at the same time. Now that I have finally learned to do it. Yes, my friends the man that couldn't sing and play is now singing and playing. Now that is something to write the papers about. It is opening up a whole new alley for me, as far as progressing with the instrument. I changed some things up on one song this weekend, and it worked. I actually directed these people to play the song exactly how I heard it in my head. It was difficult, but we did it without too much of a hitch. I am growing more and more excited about this church, everyday. I have been inviting anyone and everyone to come see this place. It's a small building, with a small congregation, but I believe that is why I get along with them so much, is they are more like a family, than just my band mates. It reall is nice.
