Have you guys seen this? Apparently, United Airlines damaged this guys Taylor to the tune of $1200. Dave Carroll, the guitar owner, spent months trying to get United to reimburse him, without success. Getting no satisfaction from customer service (been there, done that, and got the t-shirt) Carroll took his protest to the Internet in the form of the attached video. It has become an Internet hit and, wouldn't you know it, United has suddenly and miraculously changed its tune. Obviously Dave didn't do this for the cash, as he requested that United forward any reimbursement to charity. In their new found wisdom, United will be donating $3K to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for music education for kids. (amazing what a little negative publicity can do!) Score one for the guitarist and for frustrated consumers everywhere. Maybe someone should compose a song about Comcast? Great Job Dave Carroll!

Actually you are the second person to post this on here today. I've also seen this on icomp last week and jazzguitar.be this week.

This year 1.16 million babies will die in Africa within 4 weeks of being born, from largely preventable conditions. I don't care though because I'm all concerned about some middle-class, white English-speaking cunt with access to the Internet in a first-world country who had his guitar broken. It's good to see Dave Carroll hasn't allowed this dreadful incident to overwhelm his sense of moral priorities. Babies in Africa are a dime a dozen but $1200 guitars don't just grow on trees! Fuck you Dave Carroll and anyone who is petty enough to think you matter.

Wow farlow...I have to say I surely didn't mention this in an effort to overlook dying babies in Africa or somehow make any actual judgment of Dave Carroll's significance to the world. I am not even sure how you got that from what I wrote. It was merely an attempt to write a guitar relevant article on a guitar relevant blog. Perhaps you are writing from a mission in Africa. Or perhaps your passion stems from the tireless work and all the money you contribute in an attempt to curb this cycle of senseless death. Whatever the case, I hope my trivial remarks do not distract you from your wonderful service to the people of Africa. At any rate sorry to offend you by writing about guitar stuff on this here guitar site!??

Farlow is doing the forest for the trees thing. The point is this guy *did* gripe about his guitar being broken. However, even though he could have taken the money completely for himself, he didn't. He did a very decent thing and had the money sent to a cause he believes in. Just because it wasn't starving kids in Africa does not mean that he is a "cunt" or anything of the sort.

You can't judge somebody else based on your own priorities of what's right and wrong. Farlow supports homeless kids in Africa...someone else supports AIDS research...someone else visits St Jude to make kids dying of cancer feel a little better. This guy chose to support music education. Nothing inherently wrong about any of those choices, as these are all problems in our world today. Just because someone didn't support *your* cause does not make their choice wrong either. In fact, I would go so far as to say the whole "If you're not with me, you're against me" mentality is *another* problem in the world today.

My original post was attempting to make this point: It's a guitar. It's a piece of wood with wires on it. It broke. Get another one! The airline eventually gave him enough money to get another one, so get another one and stop whining about it! My reference to Infant mortality in Africa was merely an attempt to demonstrate proportion. 1 million dead children versus 1 broken guitar in a country where there must be 200 million guitars. It's just a guitar Dave!

Hey farlow - Fair enough. I understand that proportionally it is not a big deal. I only related to the story because I have experienced the inconvenience of poor customer service and poor policy. You probably have too. I know in the scheme of things most of what we complain about is really insignificant. My bad days are one hundred times better than most people's good day when viewed at an international level. Just thought this story and was humorous and a pretty clever way of leveraging United to admit their fault in the matter...and since it was about a guitar...well, you get the idea.

Don't tell him how to live his life.....he decided to write a song about United breaking his guitar and he became famous on the web - I say that's a fucking smart move. Not only he got the money from United for reimbursement but he got his names out and donated 3K for music kids...None of these would have happened if he just sat there and did nothing.

It may look insignificant to you but for him it obviously meant something.....and yes babies and people in Africa are dying as we speak...guess what, we all know it. In your theory how do you manage to eat your breakfast every morning when others are dying? might as well make everyone starve to death or something.....

Where words fail, music speaks.

OK, have you ever posted something something then just wished you'd never said anything. This is my last attempt to say why I meant to say first up. To me a guitar is just an inanimate object. If it breaks or is stolen (as 4 of mine have been) I just get another one. This is because I try to focus on how good my life already is instead of spending huge amounts of time complaining about lost material possessions. If Dave Carroll wants to boost his career by pretending he is some kind of consumer crusader or, if indeed he has spent the last 15 months stewing about the damage to his sacred object then good on him! He's simply expressing his democratic right to bitch and whine endlessly about anything he wants.(At least I guess it is, I don't know if they have a Bill of Rights in Canada) I was wrong to tell him how to live his life and I am sure you would agree with me, goodbyeboy, that if people want to marry their gay lovers and open a string of abortion clinics, nobody should criticise them or tell them not to. It's good to see another radical libertarian on this site. And Jesusbikerfreak, you were right to post this - it's a guitar-related issue on a guitar site! Pickabass, I don't like kittens much either.

Right, I think I've covered everything

I completely get where you are coming from with this one Farlow, it's something that bothers me a lot; the state of the world in general and the terrible life people in third world countries (and our own). The main problem and reason to focus on other things that I've found is that we can do absolutely f**k all about it. How can I go about helping people less fortunate than myself. If you think about it too much it makes you very worried so it's best to do what you feel you can and get on with your life. This is what I think.
