Hmmm.

Rolling Stone asks of its readership "what are the greatest solos of all time?"

There's two that stick out in my mind as far as rock players go. My immediate responses are "Rest In Peace" by Nuno Bettencourt of the band Extreme and "Jump" Ed Van Halen. I know, the song itself may be beyond trite but the solo I feel is timeless. The solo starts at 2:16 if you want to by bypass Roth yelling his prose.

I enjoy skinny skiing, heckling figure skaters, flamenco guitar, the blue stuff you put your combs in, good drummers, focaccia bread and coffee out of a french press

" No More Tears " - Ozzy Osbourne (Zakk Wylde) - can a solo be crafted any better then this?
" For the Love of God " - Steve Vai
" Finnish What you started " Van Halen - Eddie goes country - not your typical harmonics/double tapping/ dive bomb EVH solo.

David Gilmour-Pink Floyd: Delicate Sound of Thunder:
Tune: Comfortably Numb
Note: This solo is just so deep, blows away the studio version!

Eric Clapton-Cream: Crossroads collection
Tune: Crossroads (Robert Johnson)
Note: Just the baddest assed high octane version of the tune. Claptons playing is at peak on this recording.

Slash-Guns & Roses: Guns & Roses
Tune: Sweet Child o Mine
Note: In the days of shredding, Slash stood apart and did some excellent guitar work on this record. This tune in particular for it's balance of memorable melody, and two memorable solos...memorable meaning you can sing them hear them in your head, for all practical purposes perfect. Not being a G&R fan, or a Slash fan, there is no denying this tune is the modern eras stairway to heaven (already mentioned).

Jimi Hendrix-Jimi Hendrix Experience: Axis Bold As Love
Tune: Little Wing
Note: Little wing is quintessential...arguably one of Hendrix most beautiful tunes both lyrically and musically. But the solo is supernatural, erie use of Hendrix tradmark double stops, just gleams like a diamond.

A little jazz to mention as well.....
-----------------------------------------------
Joe Pass-ANYTHING
Tune: Just about anyone (go for the solo stuff)
Note: It's Joe Pass for christ sake, the dude sounds like a five person combo with nothing but his guitar...bass and drums included.

George Van Epps-ANYTHING
Tune: Doesn't matter
Note: 7 string player mainly (pioneered the seven srting for all you floggers out there owe him a debt of gratitude) like Joe Pass, George Van Epps was one of the greatest chord melodists of all time.

I could go on forever....hate it when these posts come up, make you remember SO much great music, reminds me why I play guitar in the first place.

The only Pink Floyd song our band plays is Comfortably Numb and I play the solo.

It is one of my favorite solos. It is one of those solos where you cant blow through the scale. You can improvise but every note counts.

If you get in a groove on that solo, it is a wonderful thing.

It is not about speed(quantity) but quality.
