I am, but boy, there have been a list of issues/controversies China have been having leading up to the Olympics. I'll list the ones I've been reading about for several weeks.

1) The sailing venue had an out-of-control infestation of alge that turned the sailing venue bright green

http://www.smh.com.au/ftimages/2008/07/01/1214677990813.html

2) Islamic terrorists just killed 16 policemen and threaten to violently disrupt the Olympic games.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7540138.stm

3) Bejing have been having an ongoing smog problem. China announced a few months ago that they will seed clouds to cause rain to wash away the smog before the games, but alas, the smog still persists.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/07/31/oly.beijing.pollution/index.html

4) There's been ongoing challenges regarding the level of censorship China will impose during th games.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/07/30/olympics.internet.ap/index.html

5) The "top secret" opening ceremony had been recorded and the footage has been leaked onto the internet

....but in spite of all this, I'll still be watching!

Go USA!!!

I don't know, the Olympics just doesn't seem to be as big of a deal as it was just a decade ago. I think the last really *good* opening ceremony was the one in Atlanta.

On a side note, while going through your vids, I came across this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-nXT8lSnPQ&

"UVGarden" apparently thinks China has more freedoms than we do. He supports it by saying things about how religion indoctrinates people and science doesn't (apparently equating all non-Chinese to Christians), how the current government has an 80% approval rate (because you have no other choice), and various other blatherings. Sounds to me like *someone* is quite the communist party brown-noser.

If anyone else wants to take a turn at this guy, please...by all means.

I plan on watching just to keep count on how many times the feed cuts out. It will a few times for:
censorship
terrorist concerns
quality of systems in China

... and those are my expectations for the opening ceremony.

I feel bad for the athletes, the quality of many environmental factors is low there, regardless of the amount of rain they are pushing from the sky.

I may watch some, mostly because of China. I'm not all that interested in the athletic nature of the games. Mostly because I'm not into sports on a whole. Except football. The wait on that finally ended last night. I'll be watching more NFL, even though it's only pre-season, than I'll be watching the olympics. And I'll probably watch the olympics more than I'll watch the DNC here in Denver. (I can't wait for all the political bullcrap to be done with. PLEASE STOP CALLING ME AT HOME TRYING TO GET MY VOTE!)

Allow me to give you a hint to stop them from calling you..

Next time just tell them that as a convicted felon you can't vote.. Calls will stop in an instant.

Actually, we recognize the numbers so we just don't answer anymore. Would be nice if they could understand that ONE call is MORE than enough and continued calling only serves to aggravate those receiving all these damned calls. If I want to engage in political activities, I'll volunteer, or turn on my TV, or attend crap. I do none of this as I simply don't care to be involved in all the rah-rah crap.

To me the whole thing is more about politics than sports. I don't know how these athletes train all their lives just to compete knowing that everybody is juiced, and the judges vote according to politics. There's not one iota of fairness there. I probably won't watch much of it, if any.

Yeah, I heard about that. Exactally what is the point of these games if you have to worry about who's doped, what the gender is, what judge has a problem with a given country? Seems like an awful waste to me. Better yet, it seems like a sign of the times.

I plan on watching as much as possible, want to see how China handles this event.
I actually enjoy seeing political influence exposed, and the controversy surrounding it.
The athletes enjoy the competition, and know more than anyone else when they are getting screwed, and while I'm certain they mind, they keep going anyway. Overcoming adversity.......the real competition.

Oh, forgot to mention, screw the ceremonial bull crap, that's about the only thing I won't watch.
