I am. I've been faithfully watching the Olympics every ocurrance since I was a child. All I know is China outdid themselves with that opening ceremony! I can't even imagine how anyone else could top that one. It was spectacular!

A few things things that stood out to me was:

1 - I never seen handball played like that before. It's really exciting to watch.

2 - Yup! Bejing has smog, and plenty of it.

3 - The father-in-law of an American vollyball coach was stabbed to death, and the attacker lept to his death. The Chinese authorities would only say the attacker's name, age, and he was a Chinese citizen. I think there's more to this story. I have my theories.

4 - It appears China would not allow Taiwanese athelets to carry their country's flag, nor be identified as Taiwanese. They can only be identified as being from Taipe, Taiwan's capitol city. This is lame, but I'm not suprised.

5 - I was watching men's swimming and I noticed lane 1 in a heat was empty. Iran's swimmer was supposed to be there. I later read that the Iranian swimmer refused to swim in the same race as the Israely swimmer. This too, is lame, but I'm not suprised. Can you imagine the long plane ride back to Iran if the Israeli swimmer beat the Iranian?

6 - So far, I'm enjoying it. Go USA!

I thought the Chinese opening was very good, but still second to the 96 Atlanta opening. The music for that one is just amazing.

I haven't seen anything else of it though. No tv in my apartment!

Oh yea, during the medal ceremony where Michael Phelps was awarded his gold medal, the Chinese Olympics folks screwed up the national anthem. It had 1 too many verses , then it ended abruptly, like somebody just shut off the player in the middle of the song.

I thought the opening ceremonies were great the best I've seen, however the politics of the Olympics have affected my interest in the actual events. I am tired of war, I am tired of hatred, I'm tired of religion, 3000 years ago mankind was advanced enough to use the Olympics in place of war. It seems that we are so deep into our nationalistic, religious, ideals that we can't stop for a week and have pure simple competitions. Sorry but I just don't care anymore.

But what about the trojan wars, and the romans conquest of the world. War is as old as mankind. It will be the dawn of a new day when we are without war.

Hippie, unfortunately we ain't ever going to be rid of war. 3,000 years ago, somebody was killing somebody, somewhere. There has always been war and there always will be. It's sad, but it's a fact. It doesn't matter if we use missiles, or throw rocks. We just love to kill each other. What's that saying? "Peace sells, but nobody's buying?"

Gold Silver Bronze Total
1. China 9 3 2 14
2. South Korea 4 4 0 8
3. United States 3 4 5 12

Here are the totals so far. I would have loved to have seen Phelps beat that French guy, especially after he said he would crush Phelps.

Well, you guys missed one of the top olympic highlights. The Mens 400 meter relay. Already, Michael Phelps is so-far on track to beat Mark Spitz record of 7 gold medals. He had qualified for the 200 meter race just hours before he had to swim again in the medal heat of the 400 meter relay. From the US point of view, the 1st black swimmer to be in the hunt for a gold in US history. THEN..... the French swimmer had to go running his mouth to the press about how the French was going to smash the Americans. BTW, he happens to be the world record holder in the 100 meter freestyle. So there's the backdrop for the drama.

The record holder from France was going to swim the final leg, against an American who has been his own coach for the last two years, and hasn't really lived up to his potential. So the race takes place and going into the last leg, the French record holder, Alain Bernard, is leading the Americans by over a 1/2 body length. That's a huge defecit to overcome when you're going up against the record holder. Coming out of the turn at 50 meters, the American, Jason Lezak was still 1/2 body length behind Bernard. Personally, I though tthe race was over. Then amazingly, I saw Lezak move over close to the rope seperating the lanes and got into Bernard's draft. Then at the last moment, he pulled away and amazingly won the race. Nobody could believe it, and especially Bernard. He did the trash talking, and he's the one who lost the race for France.

It will be a long, lonely flight back to France for Bernard. I'm wondering how the French press will be viewing this.

This race will go down in my mind with the US Hockey team beating the Soviets in 1980, Nadya Comeniche wining a perfect score on the uneven bars, and Mary Lou Retton vaulting with a broken foot to win the US women's gymnastics for team USA.

They'll do what the French always do. They'll say we cheated.
