I would expect that if they actually got married as the article says, they probably would have done the deed on their honeymoon, (If not sooner as we all know...)

Brother and sister are a little close, but it has been determined that in most cases, cousins are not. (Though the doctors doing this study could have been from West Virginia...) Of course it's not the sex but the result that can be disastrous.

jesus....thats... really really horrible! imagine loving someone enough to marry them and then finding this out, and having to stop the romantic relationship.... oh god... thats just sick..... he was doing nasty things to his sister!

Getting married is not an easy decision and getting divorced is even harder but usually based on reasons that are clear but to get married and then having to separate for something like this, tough. I mean the jokes are obvious but to lose like this, wow. You can't just walk away because you are related and you can't stay because you are related, I guess I just feel bad for these guys. Oh well maybe they should take up guitar and form a band.

I think they both will need some serious counseling. I know when I got married the state required blood testing - you would think that the genetics in the blood would have suggested something was awry. If the psychological scars from sleeping with you sibling weren't deep enough - they each just lost the "love of their lives". Thank goodness the names were protected - imagine the comments they would get on the street. Poor souls.

Well, blood tests aren't used to determine relationships. They don't do any DNA testing. They were originally in place to screen for diseases and possible incompatibilities that could result in birth problems. It wasn't until fairly recently that we could do DNA testing and blood tests have been around a LOT longer.

Sorry to post so lighthearted about this. After reading hippieway's comment, i began thinking this just sucks in a very bad way. I suspect for their emotional and mental health, they would probably have to part ways and not be in each other's lives at all. I can't see them continuing a brother-sister relationship after all of this.

But it still confuses me. I wonder how they could fall in love, spend time courting and not have warning signals be raised. But then again, there's that saying, "love is blind".

Biology flash:

Twins don't necessarily look more alike than non-twin siblings. This guys being of opposite sexes, I'm pretty sure they don't look much alike, not only because of the sex difference but because they MUST come from different eggs and different sperm (by the same dad, at the same time. Rare but happens when the mother releases two eggs from her ovaries instead of one). Therefore there might easily not be enough similarity to raise curiosity. Being separated at birth means they probably didn't meet their parents (I didn't read the article), they possibly don't know their story and they don't have the same last name.


Offspring from siblings are prone to getting serious defects, due to the high possibility of getting a full pair of the exact defective genes (nobody is genetically perfect, having two different copies of genes is what keeps us going).


Blood tests, like Xark said, are meant to screen for things like Rhesus incompatibility (that can kill a mother at her second child if not treated), blood diseases like sorts of anaemia and other defects and complications that can occure often enough to matter, even when the parents are UN-related. When the parents are closely related, nearly everything can go wrong.
Even DNA tests look for abnormalities like missing or surplus chromosomes. To identify siblings, it's no longer "simple" DNA tests that are necessary. It's a whole DNA fingerprint that is necessary and that's not done by default because the odds of siblings getting married is nowhere near high enough to justify it.

It sucks to be them. Poor guys. They can still stay married and avoid having a child of their own and adopt one instead.

I'm aware the brother and sister have to be fraternal twins. However, fraternal twins can very much have a close resemblance to each other, notwithstanding male/female differences. But nevertheless, a resemblance would be expected, unless one or both had plastic surgery. Couple a resemblance with identical birth dates, I expect some sort of red flags should have been raised.
