Anyone know anything about computers? I have a problem that I can't figure out.

A co-worker gave me his laptop because he is frustrated with it. Once you boot it up you can browse the internet for about 10 minutes then the internet just stops.

You can ping IP addresses but not load web pages. Any browser used (IE or Fire Fox) will display an error message that says the page failed to load.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1150 with XP Home. It has a broadcom internal lan card and is hard wired to a cable modem.

If you reboot the computer you are good for about another 10 minutes, then you have to reboot again, and again, and again... forever.

I have tried thus far,
- re-installing network card drivers (from dell and manufacturer)
- uninstalling all un-necessary internet related software
- antivirus scan
- spyware removal
- used the windows xp sinsock fix tool
- tcpip optomiser
- reset the mtu to 576 and later tried 1500
- flushed the dns
- disabled power management features of the lan card (and wireless card that I'm not using) [wireless card has same problem]
- Manually input figures for TCPIP, DNS, and Wins servers

That's all I can recall. I'm about to give up on this laptop...

could there be some internet monitoring software installed that limit the time spent online?

Well, I totally hosed up the comptuer following some regedit fix I got off the internet. Now the computer won't boot and I need an XP system CD to restore it.

All is good. I reinstalled XP over the existing operating system. Everything works including the internet (as it's supposed to). All my files are still there. Had to reinstall a few drivers and programs but all is good.

I am now at peace.

Chapter closed.

Ya know. I'm glad I totally hosed it and had to re-install. Because, otherwise I'd still be screwing with it trying to make it work.

Wiping the hard drive with format c: if lots of fun :)
