I was wondering how some of the people here have dealt with hecklers and drunks since this seems to be an occupational hazard for bar bands. Do you usually bring along some extra muscle in case the bar doesn't have it covered? What were some of the comebacks you've used?

I've only ever had that problem once in my life. Some guy yelling you suck.. over and over.

I finally said.. "You're right but, You're paying to be here and I'm getting paid to be here. Go Figure".

He shut up.

- change the lyrics of the song to say something to insult the heckler
- sneak out and key his car, or better yet, let the air out of one of his tires. he will be half drunk when he leaves, and he will get halfway home before he figures it out. LOL
- take the hecklers date home with you.
- hand the waitress a $50 and ask her to piss in his next beer.
- sneak out and remove the oil drain plug from his vehicle. his engine will be destroyed before he gets home.
- dont do any of these things because they will likely lead to trouble.

I usually ignore them. In most cases other bar patrons will take care of it since they are ruining everyones time.

If it continues I insult him even worse than he did the band.

If he still continues give a very serious warning.

If all this fails, the entire band will beat the stuffing out of him and throw him in the dumpster out back.

I like playing in the south. We tend to simplify things.

That was my experience. I've been through the south and people were really great. Well, except for 1 experience. I'm a civil war buff, well military history buff in general. I had an opportunity to visit the Chickamauga Battlefield. Everyone was very friendly and the park personnel were very informative. Then just as I was about to leave, I saw a guy at the distance who gave me a stare that could slay an elephant. It caught me so off guard, I didn't have a clear mind to respond in a way that I would have wanted to. In hindsight, that was a good thing. But I consider that a 1-off since all my other experiences were so positive.

That's unfortunate dc. Sounds like the guy needed a good lesson in manners! I have found those types of idiots practally everyplace I've gone. I think to myself, ok, this guy doesn't even know me, so chances are if he has a problem with me, and he doesn't even know me, he's done this to others as well, and one fine day, you just know somebody is going to hand him his ass.

Good point, Fred.

Johnny says: ' ... we tend to simplify things'. Don't you wish it was easy for everyone to be courteous? Or better yet -- that they understood what courtesy is ?

As they say, ... common-courtesy is not so common anymore. 'Gal-durn' shame, too Bubba.

I've lived in Louisiana for a while, and I've been to South and North Carolina on several occasions and I was always treated with the utmost courtesy. The one question I head more than any other was, how do you like it here so far? They ask this because they want you to feel at home there, and they always went out of their way to be kind. However, if you go down there with an attitude, then attitude is exactly what you'll get back.

Hecklers just want to be recognized. So recognize them in a way that totally embarrases them.

I use to carry a set of "dueling guitars." My Vox Mini XII and an Epiphone Pee Wee. Both guitars fit in a single case, allowing me to challenge the heckler to a "duel." Usually they don't accept and that's enough to shut them up. When they do accept they're surprised because even if they DO play guitar, being half-drunk and presented with a choice, (the old choose your weapon line,) they were expecting to be handed a full sized guitar, not a virtually 1/4 scale instrument. They also always choose the Epi, as a 12 string in that size is even more intimidating. However, I practice that little 12 and they've never handled a guitar that small. Aside from the fact they can't actually "win" the duel, it makes for lots of "small" jokes that make the heckler feel even smaller. All in line with putting on a show. No one gets hurt. (Though piss in the beer would be sweet.)

here is a good example of one of the differences between the south and our northern neighbors.

i used to work for the railroad as an equipment operator. we did alot of traveling and i found myself in many different areas. people made fun of my southern accent when i went in stores or restaurants. this took place mostly in Pennsylvania and northern Ohio. when i was in Iowa and Nebraska, people were much nicer, and i dont recall seeing that kind of thing when "outsiders" were traveling down here. my personal experience has been that the northeast is the least friendly part of our nation. i know, i know, everybody up there isn't like that....................
