Dudes and Dudettes, alike; I just recieved a HP Pavillion Laptop, and an Ibanez ATK400 Bass. My wife's sister and her husband, had this computer about 6-8 months, trying to use it for College. The computer wouldn't do what she wanted, so they gave it to us. I have a lot to learn before I go putting my tunes on the site here, but I feel like good things are coming my way. I have to fix the bass. It has an active pickup so I have to fix the battery connector, but I hooked it up the other night and it works. I also have to get the electronics cleaned out, and make a cover for the back. But man am I stoked! Anyone else had any the GAS gods send anything your way?

The ATK series is KILLER. I wanted one for the longest time, but I ended up getting an SRX390 instead. Those basses can do the Geddy Lee thing *extremely* well.

Then, I will be worshiping at the altar of the gas gods.

Yes, and as soon as I figure out all this new technology I will be able to post some songs on here, hopefully. The computer has a 400GB memory, 4g hard drive. Is that good? It is a lap top, so I will be buying a separate hard drive for storage. Oh and the gave me an Ipod thingy, but I am afraid I would break it or lose it, so I am giving it to my wife. I like having the cd anyway.

400GB hard drive and 4GB of memory should do you really good for a laptop. Good idea with the external HDD.

What audio interface? Firewire, USB? If you have a firewire audio interface you probably want a USB hard drive or vice versa... unless you have an esata port for the HDD? That would be awesome.

(If you don't have an interface yet and are going firewire, make sure your firewire chipset is compatible.... )

I am actually going to record it onto my BR1200CD, mix it, and then USB out of that, into the Laptop. Download it as a wave file, and then compress it as much as possible without losing quality. The BR1200CD records in 24 bit. At least that is what the manual says. The Laptop has Itunes built in, but I am probably going to look into just using the laptop as my link to the web, and not have to store the music on there until I do get a separate hard drive. But I am reading the manuals, and help guides right now, so it might take me a month or so before I actually get everything set up. plus I have to get a high speed modem, and high speed internet service. And I don't have that kind of dough at the moment. But I at least have a computer that is not 15 years old. This thing is going to be friggin' awesome, man. By the way, I am fairly ignorant to the whole computer world, so if I ask some dumb questions bare with me. I will learn as much as the manuals can teach, but everyone knows how that works out, you have to learn a lot from trial and error.

Sounds like you are off to a good start... I remember now that you have the Boss unit. I just sold my 2400CD and am planning to go ITB (in the box). Taking away a couple of steps.

Happy music making, my friend.

Thanks. I am always happy making music. That is my religion. The Philosopher's stone, The Holy Grail, Nirvana, and that little place they call Zion. That's what music is for me.

that's cool frum

The GAS gods haven't smiled on me yet...more like their dangling a new amp in front of me.

In return for giving my wife her 5 year anniversary gift about 10 months in advance, she's offered to buy me a new guitar amp of my choice up to equal value of the new shiny diamonds I bought her as an upgrade to her wedding and engagement rings.

The only catch is that my wife needs to pay down her credit card first because she's racked it up recently (unusual for her... she's usually got it paid off by months end). Another stipulation I've sort of self imposed is to wait for the amp to go on sale; meaning I may have to wait until Boxing Day. She's the one who gave me the idea to wait for a sale, because she said if I wait for it to go on sale she would like to buy something else for me in addition to the amp (like a decent condenser mic or midi keyboard for my little project studio I'm putting together). Maybe I'll get really lucky and the amp will be on sale low enough to get both a mic and a midi controller. :)

The local university here got a fancy new snake to replace their old one. It was all tied in to the building, had stuff built around it over the years etc etc etc so they had to cut the old one out - they gave me a 40 foot length of multicore cable, 24 balanced channels on one cable! It's really gonna help me in my studio - I'm running it under the floor from the control room to the wall panel in the live room, and that leaves me 25 feet to make a few small snakes for patching. So that was pretty badass. Other than that, I have been working a lot on the road [I hate going on the road] but am gonna pick up a Pro Tools Essentials bundle today, only $100 for a little 2 channel interface with a stripped down version of protools and it's compatible with my big system [which is currently in storage]. Can't go wrong with that.
