The New Zealand Herald reported in June that a prostitute may be eligible for worker's compensation based on her having been injured when the car in which she was riding plunged down a hillside. Because the driver was a john who was taking her to a site he had chosen for their encounter, the Prostitutes Collective trade union said hers were "workplace" injuries. [New Zealand Herald, 6-25-07]

I wonder if contracting an STD makes them eligible?

The Prostitutes Collective trade union? I didn't realize prostitution was legal in NZ. It's quite funny that it's not legal in the states. Make no sense. It's a great example of the Federal government not respecting individual rights and contracts. How can porn be legal and prostitution not?

Yes, prostitution is legal here in NZ, as is gay marriage (although it's referred as a 'civil union' to keep the fundies from the door). However, brothels are not allowed in certain areas, such as near schools, etc (individual city councils set this one; you should see the fuss and foaming mouths that results). Sounds like the 'john' should have to pay the damages, as he is her employer and the one responsible for the unsafe condition of the workplace.

One another note, the news the other day said a woman who was tailing a garbage truck on her way home got to see it drive into her house, causing $thousands of damage. Never a dull moment.
