Funny... I have pics of lots of people with guitars, but I don't have one of ME with a guitar. So...

Here's one of me and my daughter at her wedding and an older one of the studio which now has 6-7 more guitars than this one did.

By the way Xark, I don't know if you read my post on the Boss BR1200CD, but I bought one for Christmas, and I am awaiting to bea able to actually write some good solid tunes. But you were the one who said you liked stand alone units as aposed to computers. I went and tried both, and I think this is the beginning of a great and long journey with this device. It's going to be fun.

Cool! It will allow you to do all sorts of things a LOT easier than the computer at this point. Just remember that your recording process starts with the mic, so keep away from the real cheap ones! (Meaning under $100... Unless it's an SM57 for recording your guitar cab.) There's lots of good mics out there for under $300.

Xark - could you please recommend a few good mics under $300? I am planning on expanding my home recording setup and need some mics to record voice and acoustic guitar. The problem with using an SM57 or SM58 for everything is that everything starts to sound the same. Also, my acoustic sounds like ass though a 58.

Best mic under $300 for acoustic and voice - MXL-V69G. Yeah, it's a Marshall mic, but it's a tube mic and sounds great for both acoustic and vocals. Unfortunately, it's JUST under $300.

Most condenser mics will perform well for acoustic and vocals. I also like AKG, and their lower end condensers are pretty nice. Studio Projects and SE are two good names as well. They both make condensers that cost less than $300. Make sure you choose a "large diaphragm" condenser. If you decide to get two mics, make the SECOND one a small diaphragm. The small diaphragm condensers work great for micing the neck to gain a little sparkle. The large d's work much better on the body.

The NADY RM-2 is a pretty sweet ribbon mic, also under $300. The only problem you might have with this mic is it's a ribbon. While they're VERY smooth and natural, they also don't put out a strong signal and REQUIRE a decent preamp to work properly.

Having a selection of mics is a good thing as, yes, using the same mics all the time make everything sound the same. Funny you mention your acoustic sounding like ass through a 58. When we first got our Royer ribbons, (well over $1000 each,) we were sure we'd found the perfect acoustic mic. My 12 string was clean and detailed and it sounded GREAT. Next week a band came in and we dragged it out thinking "this will be easy!" Right. That mic made that acoustic sound like total crap. We ended up micing that guitar with a 57 as it didn't expose all the flaws like the Royer did.

I have a Peavey PV10 or 20, I'm not sure. It's a live mike. I know I need a condenser mike at some point, but the BR1200 cost me $672.00. So I won't be making a purchase at the moment, except for a new surge protector, so I can plug all of the stuff I have so far in. By the way, if I plug in my guitar through my tube pedal, into the Recorder, will it hurt the recorder or the pedal? I know I can use my recording out on my Roland Cube for now, but I was wondering if you can go direct to the recorder?

Going guitar to pedal to recording unit should be fine. Just watch your levels. Start with any preamp and the pedals volume at zero.

Thanks for the suggestions! Even with the limited studio experience I have, I know enough that great recordings start at the beginning of the signal chain with killer mics. It doesn’t make sense to dump truckloads of cash into fancy outboard gear if your mics suck. If I had the cash I’d buy a U87.

Well, my acoustic is a Taylor 110. It has nice highs but can be heavy on the muddier mids, which the 58 brings out.

Thanks for the info on the tube pedal, Evol666. I am going to have to get a good set of studio monitors. My Headphones are pretty decent, but I will have to be able to hear it out loud in the room, eventually. Since I have a solid state amp, are and the BR1200CD is all digital, are there any items I can pick up that would give that tube sound, without buying a tube amp for now?

Tube mics. Tube pres. Tube compressors. We use ALL tube gear in the recording process. Not using a tube mic we still have the pre and compressors, so you get that tube flavor without having to have a tube amp.

Also... Emulators suck IMO... To emulate different guitar amps in the studio, we do it manually. We have several amps to choose from so we just reamp a CLEAN signal, (playback from your recorder back to your amp input,) set distortions or effects and take those multiple amp tracks and blend them together to make it sound like any amp on the market. This, of course, requires multiple amps, all having their eq's set a bit differently.

One other thing... In the studio small amps sound HUGE. We have several 5-15 watt tube amps that will blow away a Marshall half stack for recording. You can get the Epi Valve Junior for well under $200 and now you'll have a tube amp to mix in.

Now that's something that I didn't know. I am not a performer right now, a little 15watt tube amp would be perfect. I thought about a Vox, or a Peavey.

Nice guitar. There was a guy, who was an Ozzy impersonator, that lived across the hall from me, and he had an Epiphone version of Zack Wilde's Camo target Les Paul. He had a Vampira guitar, complete with the case and all. That your work place, studio, what?

Which one, the electric, or acoustic? I always seem to get really good deals on stuff. The acoustic, I paid $160.00. It was used. It had some pot resin above the sound hole. I scrubbed and scrubbed. The electric, was about $450. But you need to go online and purchase one of them. Musician's Friend has them for cheap. they have the electric for even cheaper than i bought it at one point. It was a 2004 model, so they were trying to move them. But, neither of them have ever been 700, seriously.
