I'm currently attending college (it blows) and am buying my first guitar. I always thought that it was an odd stereotype that college kids play guitars and do drugs. but i understand now. (the guitar part) its a total lack of stimulation and creative activity. i have WAY to much free time on my hands and i didn't know what to do with it. i just sat in my room and listen to music, occasionally went to parties, but that wore off fast. and that's why college kids start guitar. that and the fact that most think it helps pick up chicks. i have always listened to rock and metal ever since i was a kid. i don't know why i waited so long to start playing. i guess I'm an idiot. anyways my first guitar is gonna be an ESP LTD M-100FM. not that you guys care. just thought that was an interesting stereotype. any thoughts?

Teel,

Cut yourself some slack there! You sound depressed to me. Perhaps a little guitar playing would be very helpful, but it won't if your just going to call yourself an "idiot" and give up. Even if you find that the guitar is not your thing that's no reason to just give up. Life is what you make of it! BTW, try not assume what the rest of us think, or whether we care or not. At least let the people here post something first. Most of the people here are *very* considerate of others.

maybe i wrote that wrong. im sorry you took it that way. i was just expressing an opinion on what i thought an odd stereotype was. but your right about the guitar part. i think its gonna bring me out of this bored and uncreative funk im in currently. i find college to be very unstimulating. at least my campus anyways. the people here, man i cant even explain them. shallow is a good word, the kind that sacrifice personal identity for popularity. but the only reason i even posted anything is because i like the people on here, there genuinely nice, and thats refreshing.

This might or might not surprise people, but it is my opinion that kids in general are stupid. It's up to them to learn though, and I think each and every individual has a potential to grow and develop--however this depends on them. I can say for sure I was stupid when I was a kid.

I picked up the guitar when I was younger because it looked like fun. After learning it on and off and changing my "reasons" for playing/not playing for the past...say 6 years or so, I've decided to lay off the video games and just play. No stupid BS like "I want to express myself" or "I want to change the world with my playing" or "I want people to notice me". I just want to play.

Sorry if it sounded like a rant, but one thing I would ask of you is to actually find value in what you decide to do, then do it. There's no point doing something purely from a superficial motive; it just won't stick. This goes for anything and everything, not just to playing the guitar.

As for learning guitar to pick up chicks...I think that's silly but that's just me.

i have always wanted to play guitar, and the reason is i suppose that i just wanna play guitar. i dont know how else to explain it. but if that is a superficial reason and your right and it doesnt stick, then what the hell, it was a good idea at the time so why the hell not. i agree that kids are stupid, i definitely do stupid things constantly. but i think that when i get my guitar and start learning how to make the music ive always listened to, or even my own, that it will stick with me. i have no desire to be a proffesional, to much pressure. but i would love to be able to play for friends and family, maybe not family. i have a country family. i dont know why i do any of the things i do really other than because i want to. most think thats a reckless way to be, but i kinda like it.

I'm up to my eyebrows in students who feel the way you do, especially right now. This time of year is very stressful for students. Every body's trying to get ready for finals. It can be a real bitch! Try not to let it get you down.
If your into metal, that sounds like a good guitar to go with. I've never played an ESP, but I know a lot of people who are into metal like those guitars. As long as it's good for you. That's the only thing that matters. Ibanez also seems to be quite popular.
Just keep a positive attitude and practice!!! Keep at it and believe in yourself. Your only a stereotype if you allow it to be so. Every journey begins with a single step and we've all been there. Post anything you need to post to learn what you need to learn. That's what this site is all about!

Once you get your guitar you will need to learn how tune it before you do anything else. The standard tuning is A440, this site is free...

http://www.metronomeonline.com/ Standard tuning is..

E-very
B-ad
G-irl
D-oes
A-lmost
E-verything

If you need more help tuning your guitar, you can find a number of sites that can show you. YouTube can also be helpful here. Some of the others will probably weigh in with some better advice. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need.

"the kind that sacrifice personal identity for popularity"

Ye old sacrificing the heart for the for the pretty again, are they? ARGGHH!! Seriously, what are you studying? I went through 1 year of college, and then I figured out that I was wasting my time and my parents money, and I told them that. So I started working three jobs, literally. After that I went and traveled. No one ever travels anymore, just the open road, nothing but a map and a tank of gas. AHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh. At any rate, brother, welcome to the web page, officially.

It's sexists, I admit, but it works. Besides, I like those bad girls. Hell, I like all girls. Take out Rosie O'Donnell because she's so damned mean and crazy.
