OK, so I sat down to do some recording yesterday. I thought "Hey, I'm in the mood to do a song..." Mostly because I'm sick of instrumental guitar, and have no more ideas for instrumental guitar stuff anymore... Besides, actual songs are more fun, and they're entertaining to listen to!
So I did one, and it was going OK, except... I am happy with the sounds I'm getting with my rigs. When I go to record, I'm having some SERIOUS phase issues. Hell, it's nasty enough that I may just go back to using a POD for a bit... (nahhhh, it's never THAT bad!)

Anyways, I thought I'd post my track so y'all can hear what I've been up to. It was fun, I kinda like the song, but man.... It's a lot of work! lol

Here's the link! Lemme know whatcha think, eh?

Poppy and catchy. You really let it rip on that solo...I like it a lot. Who did the vocals?

i can't listen now as it's late at night.

but..if you're having phase problems...all you need to do is remember your 3:1 rule...for ever 1 (increment) away your first mic is make the second 3 times that distance away from your first mic.

but standing waves and reflections introduce a lot more problems because now there are difference 'sources'.

your 3:1 has to apply to walls and such also.

Scott,

How much do you improvise with your solo's?
I'm just curious if you actually write out the solo and play note for note or just blast off.

I did the vox, that's why they sound that way! lol I'm not a singer, but I have the odd idea, and all of the music I really dig is vocal music, hence a vocal tune! lol Something different, eh? Recording with Logic makes it easy, that's for sure.

My solo was improvised, I just played over the progression 20-30 times and picked the 'best' one. (I still wasn't really happy with it... I haven't had much of a chance to play for the last 5 months and it's really showing. Of course, I just quit my job so hopefully that works out OK!)

When I do a good one, maybe I'll tab it out!

Thanks for the listens, guys!

Heh, that's good enough for me. If you make a good one by your standards it's gonna take me 20 years to get to the proper level before being able to play it =P

so...standard questions...

what's your signal chain, what's your room like...did you eq, did you add reverb...

electric guitar is a difficult thing to record in small spaces with bad acoustics even with 1 mic. you can get reflections into the same mic and have it sound like you stuck your mic in a pvc tube. (which is a bad thing)

keep cracking at it.

Well, I think a LOT of it has to do with not being isolated, and letting the monitors roar away while I'm recording! Next time I'll "monitor" with headphones... lol Still, not so bad! I'm confident it'll get better...
Pedal rig into Peavey Classic30 miced with a sure 57 (About 45degr off the speaker 1.5" away. Mixer's a Behringer Xenyx2442, into an M-Audio Firewire 410 then into my mac (Straight to Logic, although I did do some preliminary work with Rype...)

The room has a lot to do with it too; Unfinished basement with concrete floors, (ugggghhh) Wanna talk about reflections? lol
Fun as hell. Songs are cool. I've said it before, but I really do think I'm done with instrumental music... (Out of ideas...)

whoa whoa. there's your culprit. cement is THE perfect tone killer...playing to your monitors is just asking for trouble.

the mics and interface seem okay. (though i've never dealt with the behr, the name alone makes any engineer shifty eyed)

and i've said this before, but the backing begs something fresh. vi IV V...vi IV iii...is okay i guess, and i'm not asking for jazz...but you should try to stretch your rhythmic ideas a bit more. i'm not saying 5/4...just expiriment...listen to something different.

i may have posted this before...but this song has some great rhythmic ideas...and it's pretty dark sounding (though not metal at all). it'll kick in at 40 seconds or so.

I love listening to and creating instrumental guitar music. But it seems that only actual guitar players (or wannabe's) are impressed by 4 minutes of straight guitar playing. The average listener wants to hear something they can relate to while at the same time hearing something unique that stands out.

I try to convince myself that I play for my own amusement and that I should not choose what to learn and do based on what everybody else wants. But... I have to admit that I want others to hear what I play and I'm concerned about what they think of it. I guess that's the real drive to improve. I don't just want to know how to play... I want others to like what I play.

I have no idea why I'm writing this... nothing to do with the thread topic... guess i'm having a "blah, blah, blah" moment.

it's all good, man. I agree. While it's nice to have people listen to your stuff and say, "Whoah, that playing is amazing..." it's a lot better, and more rewarding when they say "Sweet tune, do more...." It's a lot of fun to be able to play what others like, especially if you can do your own thing with it and "spin it" a bit while remaining faithful to the original arrangement...

+1 webcred or everyone!
