I've been using Guitar rig for one year now and I have to say that it's the best and cheapest way to get clean recordings have you tried it, what do you think of it... I've been using using it for the video...

Modelers have their place, but don't compare to the real thing. We have several in the studio and generally use them only for scratch tracks. (Though we record a clean track at the same time just in case it's a great performance, then reamp that track through the real deal.) Some clients keep the modeled tracks saying it's good enough, but then we still reamp them because it just comes out better.

Remember though... We're a studio and reach a bit higher than the home recordist. And for the home recordist, modelers are a godsend! We have multiple amps in the studio, most home recordists do not. We have a selection of about 20 guitars, many home recordists do not. We have multiple mics and pres, most home recordists do not. We also have extensive schooling and experience with what we do, most home recordists are more into playing than recording.

In that light, modelers provide a lot of versitility to the home recordist for the price of one decent preamp or a decent mic. Modelers are a means to an end, but not the end to all means.

Too true, Xark... I'll probably pick up Guitar Rig, just so I don't have to lug too much around with me when I work out of town and stuff, but I'm in love with my amps; I have 5 at the moment. heh And 14 guitars, so that would make me an extreme hobbyest? lol!

You've always been extreme Zombre.

There was a time I would rail against modelers. I felt they were a cheap shortcut that didn't really deliver the goods. But you need to look at things from many angles. They serve their purpose and that's what counts here.

Analog gear can be expensive. Decent pres start around $500. (There are some less than that.) Good pres are more than that. It's the same with mics. I've discovered why studios cost so much over the years. Filling a space with decent gear, axes, amps and other instruments isn't cheap! Sure we could offer an empty space, but providing a selection of instruments gives recording groups a lot more choices. (Aside from the fact that we get to use it ourselves!)

I'll say it again. My studio is open to members of g.com for free if we have the time available. It's more play time than anything else, but if anyone is ever in the Denver area and wants to record a little something, you're welcome to arrange a session. It's what we do, and we like doing it.

I'd love to get into your studio if only I lived in the US. Hope that one day I'll be able to get my own studio... Maybe owing to guitar.com
