So I got a weird call to go do sound for a "School of Rock" type of music school, and record it a few weeks back. I accepted, easy money. They give me a list of what's to be on stage, and I use mics from my own personal collection. The owner of the school kept joking about having a list of songs they do and who to run down, it was kind of funny at first but got old very quickly. Then on the night, he had a song list, complete with notes about which kid sucks and when to turn them down. That made me mad. There was way more stuff on stage that needed to be miced than was on the list, and they insisted on using those "3 for $10" type of vocal mics. Also, the teachers all had these rock star attitudes, and the amp volume on the one teacher's amp wasn't even running through the PA. "Gotta crank it up to get that tone, man" he kept saying... however, it was a solid state amp and therefore doesn't get any power tube saturation when it's up louder. Plus, in my opinion... his tone was like ass. So I turned him down MYSELF during soundcheck, and of course throughout the night he magically got progressively louder.

I did sound for the show and it sounded good, I didn't turn down the children as I was supposed to, but it seems to me that these teachers [who were with all the groups, taking all the solos and turning up louder than everyone else] just enjoy looking amazing next to the kids. They aren't all that good, but they sound great next to kids who only have 6 months under their belt.

The recording... I rushed the mixing and gave it back really poorly done and didn't charge them for it.

I know they were paying me to do sound and recording, but I screwed it up because in my mind they are just ripping these children's families off [they offer keyboard and vocal lessons, but don't have teachers for either - the guitarist does it, and he can't do either properly. He can probbly show someone the absolute basics of keys, but he can't sing]. It's horrible, and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they can't find people their own age to jam with because of their monster egos.

That's messed up. Kids should be allowed to play.

That said, I once played a gig where our drummer turned the keyboard player's volume down for practically half the songs. Needless to say, she was an attractive female. And she still got paid the $100 for the night.

That place should be put out of business. They really have the wrong attitude. They're just ripping the kids off to make themselves look and feel better. And the kids have no idea they're being worked. that's sad. You should have made the instructors volume cut in/out while they were playing!

i work or a music conservatory. we put on 2 showcases every year. and i don't go on the stage with the younger kids unless they absolutely need me to. and then i just sit with them for support. and i always make them take the solo's. the parents come to see them...not me. i DO have some older students that i go on with. but i play bass with them and try to sing the songs THEY choose to do. fortunately this year i have some bass students who should be able to handle the load. these kinds of shows are for the kids and thier parents. it's ridiculous for teachers to act that way. and i certainly would have pointed out to the numbnuts guitar player that his SS amp didn't need any extra volume. what a moron....

I've been considering blowing the whistle but with my own company in the same town for them to slander... I just don't want to ruin my own rep.

I completely understand your disgust but at the end of the day you were a "hired gun". You took the money.

It's a moral question but you had a couple of choices while you were there.
1) Tell them and you don't work that way and walk out.
2). Explain that your the FOH guy and you will adjust to give the best FOH sound possible which means turning down the amp.
3) use the old "I can't make you sound better than you are" excuse.

I'm of the unpopular opinion that you should have done the best job possible on the CD also. Just because they were jerk-offs there is no reason you sink to their level.

I don't have to like everyone I work with. But when I take their gig I do what they ask. It's called being a professional.

Now, do I personally believe they did the right thiing by the students/parents/etc.. Of course not.

WOW! that's crazy. You mean they like mocked and discouraged kids and over played them to show them up? Well i would have to actually hear what happened to know for sure but right or wrong you were hired to do a job man so i kind of have mixed feelings.

But i might have done the same thing bro...SO CHEERS!

I kinda have to agree about doing the job you're paid to do and doing it to the best of your abilities. I've had crappy jobs and have always done them as good as I was able. Like Duane said, it's about being a professional.

I would, however, make some off the record calls to the parents to let them know they were probably being ripped off. It's sad when people get screwed and don't realize it because they don't know any better. Especially kids, I'd hate to think that some of those kids get turned off of being a musician because of starting out working with assholes.

After all, if they get into the music biz, they'll have the rest of their lives to work with assholes. The business is full of them.
