Anyone have any advice on how to choose what genre a song should belong to.
Metal and rock are easy. Ambient??? What about slow songs? How do you know?

It's a little hard. Music and art are pretty subjective to the artist. Genres and categories are for the people who seek to make money off of your art. I wouldn't stress about that if I was you.

I'm starting to post my stuff at ICompositions.com. You have to choose a genre when you upload. Some of my songs are not rock and not metal. I feel stupid not knowing what category I should put them in.

I think that most people who go there to check out music either watch the recent posts or look for music based on the genre. So I was hoping to figure out what makes what.... what...

I looked it up on wikipedia and there is some info but I still havn't figured it out.

Maybe I'll ask listeners to choose for me...

Ambient is easy to describe. It has no words, the music is midi loops in endless repetition, and the beat perfect for gay sex.

Peck, that's silly!! Ambient isn't all midi loops and endless repetition!! I think of it more as "spacey" instrumentals...Think Brian Eno or even some Kraftwerk!! (in my opinion, awesome!!)...ok, maybe perfect for gay sex, but I think the straights would get down to it too!

But yeah, genre is pretty subjective.

You're right. I was just trying to get a rise out of somebody.

It seems like just about any song you can think of could fit into one of these categories: CLASSICAL; BIG BAND; POPULAR; ELECTRONIC. Wouldn't that make those "genres"?
Country, Folk, Blues, Rock, Disco, et al, could then be sub-genres of POPULAR, could they not? And hard rock, adult contemporary, grunge, metal, Mersey, et al all sub-categories of Rock.

I make a motion that we assign to the next Gcom registrant the task of constructing an outline by which all songs, past and future, might properly (and simply) be classified.

Now I have to change some of my uploads so that they are no longer identified as ambient....

Thanks peck...

It always bugs me when a label is put on music, sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn't. What I call Americana you may call it country and that other guy may call rock and roll. However when forced to make a calling such as a web site listen to some of the other stuff in that classification and go for it, maybe post the same thing under a couple of labels because in the end it doesn't really matter and more people will hear it. Remember all types of music have slow songs and also have fast songs and everything in between.

Choosing a genre is important. This allows people to find your music. It's so that I don't have to dig in the Hip Hop section to find rock and roll songs. It directs your intended audience to your music.

True?

I get what you're saying. So maybe think about what crowd you're trying to get your music too.
