Increase tone in what way?

New pickups I guess? But if your guitar is already a good one with good pickups and the sound still doesn't do it for you, youe need to revise your settings first and if nothing fixes it you should change amp.
Also a "booster" on your guitar might help, Like the one here (if you make any sense out of it):

I wasn't happy with my guitar tone either when I started out. Changed the pickups but it didn't do much. Changed the electronics but it didn't help. I bought some pedals and it didn't do the trick either. Because it was the amp that sucked.

In my opinion. Too many people get to hung up on the "change this, change that, buy the other thing" to help their "tone" when, really, all they need is to practice. Good guitars, Good amps, all contribute to good tone but a HUGE percentage of it is the player (touch, technique, knowledge, habits).

Little things like good quality cables, new strings etc all play a part. I even found that pics sound different. If the basics: guitar and amp and cable are good, they just might not be a match for you, your style or touch. Tone is subjective. I recently played my friend's Matchless which was given to him by Bruce Springsteen. The amp is and sounds amazing with with my friend playing through it. I played through it and thought it sounded horrible...it didn't sound like me to me. Not the right amp for my style.

describe your current tone, and describe the tone you are after.

you might just need to work on your eq, you might need some effects, it all depends on where you are and where you want to go, tone wise.

Simple stuff like guitar volume and tone pots and capacitor can make a big change. For example, 500k audio taper pots for volume and tone and a .015 capacitor instead of a stock .022 might bring it to life. Same guitar, same amp, same speakers, same cord, same player, same pickups, different tone cap and pots = new tone.

i agree with most of the thoughts here especially duane. a talented player can make a guitar sound better than someone who doesent know what they are doing with that same guitar. there are always gonna be a million things you can change and adjust but until you become at least somewhat skilled you will not have the sound you want.

I would recommend getting your guitar professionally set up (if you haven't done so) This will maximize tone with proper relief, nut, action (the higher action and thicker guage strings can improve tone), and intonation adjustments. Also i would recommend upgrading your nut to a better material, and have someone who knows what they are doing make it for you. Materials i would recommend are (from most expensive to least expensive) ivory, bone, tusq (man made ivory), or an economy solution would be corian. Getting your nut redone can make a huge difference. Try out different brands of strings then get your guitar setup with your favorite ones.

Take some butter, or even margarine, and rub it all over your chest and all over the guitar. Then roll in cinnamon and singe the hair off your arms with a beeswax candle. Finally, make love to your woman (or any woman) over a sacrificial goat while holding the buttery guitar. This will increase your tone by 2.3*10^39%

Tone cannot be measured by more or less, only better and worse. This is one of my pet peeves.

technically, you can increase tone, its just that its a complete diffrent tone
theres tone 1 which you increase/decrese (tone knob/booster)
and theres tone 2 which you make good/bad (guitar/pickups/amp)
so ha!!! i win!!..but im not sure if thats a good thing--------------------------------------------->
haha
