Hi there my string on my low E string broke and I thought this is perfect since Ive been wanting new and thickers strings but here are my questions/concerns

1.Can I use these on a Gibson standard SG http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ernie-Ball-2215-Nickel-Slinky-Skinny-Top-Heavy-Bottom-Electric-Guitar-Strings-100096764-i1122272.gc

2.Can I get standard E tuning or concert pitch with these?(E A D G B E)Also the only other thing I like to do is drop-D or 1/2 step down but otherwise its standard tuning

3.Anyone care to give me some input on the strings, I asked the guitar center guys and they said Ill probally need a neck adjustment and I would kinda like to get a good pair (Ive only tried DRs and Jimi hendrix experince one is too bright or was too dull too me ,but I ve begun to like slinkys ,but I would like opinions still please!:)

Steve,

You'll be fine. You shouldn't need any adjustment unless your neck is bowed in some way, or you feel you need to adjust the action....10's should cause you no issue. BTW, never ask a guitar center employee for any advice about gear, fixing gear, etc.

Slinkies are ok...my electric choice was D'Addario for my ibanezes...

For the last 10 years or so I've used thomastic infeld exclusively. Mainly because the tone is great, and the sets are consistent from one to the next tone wise.

But, again, throw those new strings on, you should be fine tunings and all. If you had a floyd rose, or floating bridge, some bridge/spring adjustment would probably be necessary, but and SG with a fixed bridge....you could throw 13's on there if you wanted with no setup hassles.

The only thing I was worried about was I bought it used and havent bothered with checking it out real well (It plays great to me) I looked at the tune-omatic bridge and the 2 posts screwed into the body with the one on the left looks a little higher than the other and how do I know if the neck is bowed do I need a tool or a good eye with experince or will it just be obvisous?

You also got me real curious about those other strings now :P

OK... If there is no buzzing when you play, your neck is probably fine. Just look at it like a piece of wood, which it is... If it looks straight and plays fine with no buzzing or dead spots, it's OK.

As Sallan said, heavier strings shouldn't be an issue. Heavier strings provide more sustain. The disadvantage to heavier strings is if you do a lot of bending. It takes a LOT more to bend 12's than 10's.

I'll also say that D'Addarios have decent strings, but you might as well try out a few different types. Typically I change my strings on the axe I play the most about once a month. Strings aren't THAT expensive that you couldn't buy a few different sets in different gauges and take some time to find what you like and what sounds best on your guitar.

When it comes to strings, they have a lot to do with your final sound. I play a lot of acoustic and strings make a WORLD of difference here. I can't stand Elixers on 12 strings, (what I play mostly,) and have my preference there as Martin Silk and Steel. It's the only string I've used for almost 40 years now. I DO like Elixers on 6 string acoustics.

There are a lot of choices out there so don't be afraid to try different stuff. It's all good.

And if you bought your guitar used, it could be worth taking it to a guitar tech to make sure it's all good.

Your bridge should be higher on the left. If you look at new setups you'll see it's rarely level. BUT, this could have been changed by the previous owner, so it never hurts to spend a few bucks to make sure it's setup correctly. (After years of playing, you'll be able to handle most of these things yourself, so if you get the chance, or find the right tech, watch what he's doing and file it away for further reference.)

Hope that helps!

sounds to me like xark is giving you good advice.

as far as personal preference is concerned, i like EB reg slinkys (.10) on my elec and dean markley medium lite on acoustic. lots of people speak highly of the elixrs, but i tried a couple sets and i didnt like them. they felt really crappy to me, but thats why they make so many to pick from. you gotta try several and see what feels/sounds best to you.

Yeah Iam defintly doing to try different strings now, because before I thought I would need a neck adjustment for every new pair of strings sometimes I like .9s then I want meaty .11s hehe and figured it would be impossible to test strings with that since Id be broke and annoyed :D but with this news Iam excited man!

Though I think I will settle once I find those magical strings :)

It takes a while, and a lot of experimentation to find what you like. Good luck and have fun!
