I've done it on my Yamaha. I have a DiMarzio soapbar 'bucker in the neck and I turned it round and switched the phasing. As the guitar has a shared vol pot, it is probably not as effective as with separate controls. Fortunately, I have a Bill Lawrence 500l at the bridge so they are closely matched for output anyway. The difference is noticeable but not as dramatic as it might be in a LP and with a magnet turn. It certainly gives a new dimension to the shared sound which is often a bit bland.

Here's the Vintage demo. Not bad for a £300 rip-off.

One more question. From what I have read so far it doesn't seem to matter which pickup I choose to do this to )bridge or neck). Is that correct.
Thanks again everyone, this is awesome. I keep getting more excited about trying it.

There are different ways to get an out-of-phase sound. Rotating a pickup 180 degrees is NOT one of them. I have had my Dimarzios both in mirrored and in parallel orientations and I never noticed the phase effect. Take an analogue clock for instance and hang it so that 12 is at the bottom. The needles are still turning clockwise. So no game. It MIGHT however afffect sound if the pickup is not symmetrical, like having coils with different properties, adjustable polepieces on only one side etc.

One valid way to reverse the phase is to flip the magnet at the base of the pickup. But that's a hassle and frankly I'm not sure how the magnets are oriented in respect to the pickup.
The other way is to swap the hot and cold connections to the pickup. Done in 3 minutes for guitars with rear access to the cavity. However in 2-wire pickups where the shield is combined with the ground lead reversing the phase electrically will put the shield into your signal. That can have unwanted noise coming in.
Yes it doesn't matter which you reverse.

I love the out of phase sound. I do the hot/cold version mod on all my guitars. My RG has a permanently out of phase middle coil and a push-pull to reverse the bridge pickup as well. And on my SG I've also wired the middle humbucker out of phase and it slays. The characteristics and location of the pickups plays a big role in the final sound. It can sound anything from twangy to tinny.

I'm gonna give the magnet turn a try and see what happens.
Thanks ibzRG
