though it's very pricey, i am a logic pro 7 user. it is by far, in my mind, the best software out there. Mac users, if you have an extra grand laying around somewhere, definitely invest in logic pro. if it's too much, go with logic express. or, if you live near Menlo Park, CA, and Stanford University, enroll in a coarse there, and use the discount, logic pro 7 for only $250. i like logic for a variety of reasons. its easy to use, and if you can't figure something out, there are about ten lbs of manuals that show you how to do every thing.

the only other software that comes to mind, as a mac user, is protools, but it's not as fast, or easy as logic. the decision is up to you as to what you want to use, but if you have the money, definitely give logic a try, you won't regret it.

I think Protools is a great program! There are certainly a lot of great recording apps. Cubase for PC is cool. Logic, Slowtools and Digital Performer for Mac. I was using Cubase VST on a PC up until 5 years ago when I nearly lost a project to numerous consecutive crashes. I took my tower out behind my studio and smashed it with a shovel, once of course I archived everything I needed for my data transfer to a new machine. My neighbors recall me yelling "Stay still fool!"

I enjoy skinny skiing, heckling figure skaters, flamenco guitar, the blue stuff you put your combs in, good drummers, focaccia bread and coffee out of a french press

Nope. Not really. There is (was) a certain Kristal Audio Engine thing out there... I liked its ease of cutting, copying, pasting and moving around tracks by mouse dragging them. Audacity is quite less easy to deal with for cut-and-stitch tasks. But on the total Audacity is still better.

If there is anything else free out there worth considering, a search on sourceforge.net should bring it up. That's where most opensource projects can be found, audacity included. Anything free but non-opensource is demo and therefore inferior.

I use Cakewalk Guitar Tracks pro 3 beacuse it's fairly easy to use and recognized my Line 6 POD XT Live without having to configure it. I'm not heavily into home recording but for it's great for capturing ideas for songs with my band and I won't forget them by the next time we practice..LOL.
