so, my band is recording with our home studio setup and we've used Ableton to create some pretty cool guitar effects. i want to recreate those effects live, and I'm wondering if there's a way to do that other than just trying to use pedals to create something similar. Is there a way to transfer the exact effect to a multi effects processor or some sort of pedal? thanks for your help!

Unless you have a pedal that interfaces with your effects emulator on your comp... No...

We run into this in the studio all the time. We create some textures that bands want to use live. Some of it is simple, (we generally don't effect all that much,) some of it is impossible. At least to transfer to a LIVE situation.

Consider that your recordings are like studio recordings in that it is typical you will put stuff there that you can't perform live. You don't have to emulate your recordings, but when you can it's pretty nice.

Some ideas...

We've had groups that we've made disks of just their special effects that they playback through the sound system when they perform a particular song. Not all that easy as everyone needs to follow along, (meaning ear monitors so you can hear what the audience can't.) This is usually for a special sound like a siren, additional percussion, or an instrument that's not actually part of the band, like a sax, or bagpipes. I used this tactic when I was doing solo gigs. I'd record ALL the parts and then make disks each with one part missing. That allowed me to choose what I was going to play and still have the rest of the "band" on stage. (Like I could play the drums for a particular song tonight, but play the bass, or keys, or guitar on any other night.)

Just try to develop an effect close to what you already have. Yeah, it's pedals, or a multi unit.

This is one of the drawbacks of studio recording. Boston's lead guitarist HATED touring. The reason was he had to learn all the stuff he played in the studio.

thanks so much man. i figured i'd probably be stuck with just trying to come up with something similar for live application, but i thought i'm not all that knowledgable about that type of thing so i figured i'd ask.

No prob. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's not. Always ask the question. You never know...

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is an Ableton and what sort of effects does it create?
