So, I'm a huge metal guy. Lately I have been way in to Black Metal typed stuff, but not so much overboard as any of those swedish bands that wear makeup and talk about being celtic and stuff, I'm more along the lines of The Black Dahlia Murder, and things like that.
Anywho, I'm wondering what I can do to make some of the stuff I play sound a bit more dark and evil. I know a lot of it depends on modes and such, people have suggested using the phrygian mode, using chromatism, and saying that it depends on what kind of progression I am playing my music over.
Anyways, any tips or stuff like that would be sick, thanks guys

Don't laugh because this sounds very simple, but tune down either a half or whole step. More than a whole step is overkill. Trust me on this one.

"More than a whole step is overkill"

I disagree...C standard is a very dark tuning and as long as the guitar is set up to handle it, it is most definitely not overkill.

But seriously, u want extreme metal? Lots of gain. Minor scales. Chromatics. Learn to tremolo pick, palm mute, and throw in a gratuitous b5 for effect.

ya, I definitely hear you, I'm a bit more interested in finding out about the theoretical side of playing intense metal. I definitely know about palm muting, tremolo picking, sweeping, tapping, Pinch harmonics, and I play an ESP with active pickups through a Mesa triple Rectifier solo head, so I definitely know about gainlol.
And I usually tune my guitar down around 3/4 of a step. I find any more than that it likes to go out of tune too easily, and it's not set up for that stuff and I'm not a guitar techlol.
I am wondering, however, the key to "speed picking" in terms of fast alternate-picking lines. I have no trouble with tremolo(i.e. playing something like the line in eruption where he tremolo picks) but when it comes time for serious alternate picking, I kind of struggle.
All of your guys' input is greatly appreciated by the by

fast alternate picking? Have you worked out your 3 note per string scales? Those are made to burn. Lean 'em, live 'em, love 'em!

Ya, well sort oflol. I have been working on trying maybe alternate pick using 3 symmetrical patterns on each string, and just go up 3 strings, 3 notes per string, then down, 3 notes per string trying to keep a fast tempo and by using alternate picking, Not the most musical sounding thing, but I'm really trying to just stress the technique side of getting this down, and I'll jump in to the theoretical part a little bit more when I have a more firm grasp on this shiat. but I don't feel as though I'm making much progress. as much as I obviously know its slow going that kind of stuff, I just don't seem to be getting anywhere.
And ya, metalocalypse is awesome, although I don't have a tv at my house so I have to watch the episodes online, which is very slowlol

tri-tones! don't know if you know what that is, it's the tonic and a sharp 4th or flat 5th. for example, if you play an E chord/power chord, the tri-tone is the B flat chord/power chord.

------|-----------
------|-----------
------|---3------
--2--|---3-------
--2--|---1-------
--0--|---------
|
E | B flat

that's my input.

Yeah I was going to say tri tones because in classical music and back in the day the church said tri tones were satans chords lol

I Think you should try out the Phrygian Major scale. it is a mode of Harmonic Major ,but try throwing on the Tonic tone. I love the dark sound. The spelling is 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7. So say if you were playing in A minor, try throwin in A Phrygian Major (A Bb C# D E F G). It creates a nice dark sound that I highly recomend.
