Well, this is kind o' lame but some people really take this seriously... this is mostly for
fun anyway... so here is a list of my favorite whammy effects from least to best.

(7)The old open low E string gut wrenching dive...
(6)The old open G string pull & dive(With wah)...
(5)The simultaneous high E & B strings 5th fret natural harmonics dive-bomb(with delay)...
(4)The old Pre-dive and pull G string, 3rd fret natural harmonic (pulled to almost breaking
point; with flanger or chorus)...
(3)The "melting note"; preferred in A string (pluck the note, then star depressing the bar as simultaneously slide to higher frets to keep the initial pitch)...
(2)The "kitty purr" vibrato effect...

***And my true favorite of all times:

(1)The "floating scales" legato(depress the bar and compensate the pitch by playing the scale higher in the neck; i practice it so that i lower the pitch with the bar by an almost constant 1 tone{2 frets}, thus playing the scale 1 tone higher; the actual "balance" that i shall keep "detunes" slightly the scale up and down, giving the effect)...

Pretty cool indeed... now wish ones are yours?

I like all those tones. but I'd have to say the technique I use most often is letting the whammy just sit there as if it didn't exist... Ok, so sue me! XD

I've never owned a guitar with a trem so I guess you can sue me too.

I used to like to bang on the guitar while I played. You have to have the bridge "floating" to do it, but I always liked the sound.

I like using it to add a nice "shimmer" to chords. This works ESPECIALLY well on the clean channel with a bit of delay / verb. Think "lenny" or "riviera paradise" by SRV for the tone I'm shooting for.

The 5th or 7th fret harmonics across the top 3 strings (the e string must be heard at all cost) followed by a short dive produce a nice "meow" miserable-cat effect. =)

It's the only way I can add vibrato to a high screaming bent note, I can't do it with my fingers very well. I also like to vibrato the low open E when I hit it and make it moan :)

And when I do a trill (fast repeated hammer-ons) I like to dip the whammy, ala Hendrix. With a Floyd, it's very easy to do, with a vintage trem not so much. But Hendrix could do it really well with a vintage trem.

my favorite things to do with a floyd are:

the kitty kat purr flick thing, and the Steve Vai Turn-the-bar-backward and press down, or just tap it so it pulls the note up trick. Dimebag did this alot too.

I learned how to do that from a Dimebag video on youtube.

Jeff Beck has some of the most amazing trem techniques.

I like the Satriani/Vai style open string pinch harmonic while grabbing the trem bar with the picking hand and bending up then down to a dive where the strings slack and stick to the pups then release slowly listining to the strings come off the pups. Think I favor the G striing for this.
Gotta have a floyd...
