Hello,

I was wondering if there is a DVD for guitar that is as thorough and in-depth as the Jojo Mayer Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer DVD is for drums.

I have purchased a ton of material (DVDs/books), but so far haven't come across any DVD that talks about the most efficient way to play. The closest would be Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar by Jamie Andreas, but it is mostly classical technique.

Are there any better DVDs out there?

Thanks for your help!

Well, Guitar World puts out one, so does Guitarist, from the UK, and there are all kinds of musicians that put them out. Just go and check them out.

I should mention that I've been playing for 12 years and am looking for something to refine my technique.

Maybe it's time for lessons/coaching from a good guitar teacher?

I've taken 3 or 4 private lessons in the last 6 months and have seen a huge improvement in my technique.

I am just curious about the DVD thing because I saw the Jojo Mayer DVD and would love to see one like that for guitar.

For what style my friend. I'm assuming you mean rock-shred technique as most people do on this board. In that case:

John Petrucci, Rock Discipline
Troy Stetina, Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar

These two are pretty much lauded by most as quality teaching materials, not just an excuse to shred for a video camera for 60 minutes.

I have both and they are great, but the new drum DVDs are getting pretty thorough (ex. all the different types of strokes, step by step on how to perform a stroke, troubleshooting on all the wrong ways to play).

I would love to see something like this on guitar, rather than just exercises or, like you said, an excuse to shred for 60 minutes.

There probably isn't anything because everybody has their own idea of the most efficient way to play, including ways to hold the pick, picking from elbow, wrist, etc. You'd probably do best to create your own technical style by combining a style from a whole bunch of DVDs and books. Sounds like you're well on your way to doing that already. That said, I read this excellent article by Tuck Andress. This guy apparently put it upon himself to evaluate the efficiency of every picking method out there in depth. Interesting read.

Aside:

I also once thought that if I bought that certain video or DVD, which showed me the 'correct' way to hold a pick and move my right wrist and left hand, that I would magically be able to play to play all my licks 40 bpm faster in the span of a week. I've since discovered it all really comes down to ungodly hours of practice and/or innate talent (which I also discovered in that period I have none of).

Lol.......thanks for the link/info.

I understand there is no magic pill and that practice is the only way to improve. Truth is, I am blown away by the new drum DVDs (enough to actually practice and improve my drum technique). I feel too many guitar methods assume too much of the student.

It would be cool if there was a guitar DVD that held the students hand through every subject. If you've seen the Jojo Mayer DVD you would know what I was talking about.

Petrucci's Rock Discipline is an excellent video... I used to have a copy on my hard drive but when I backed up stuff before reformating I forgot about the video files.
