I usually practice a few hours daily, but because of school just starting, that doesnt work out too well. How long and how often? I feel like I want to play today, but, Im probably gonna give it a break while Im getting it setup. Never good to get burnt out on something.

Yeah I hear you on the school man. But this band is helping stay in time better and I also seem to be coming up with more interesting stuff, aswell as hearing notes better.

Some days its like wake up at 6, play guitar for 6 hours, eat, play bass for 6 hours, eat, play guitar for 2 hours. Other times i won't play for like a day or so though.

Seeing as I go to school for music, it's basically my homework to practice. But I usually get a good 6 hours in. And I only count actually playing to a metronome or drum machine. I don't take into consideration transcription and composition.

When I was in high school, I would get home at 230, and play until 9, eat something, practice, go to sleep. Didn't do homework, so I couldn't have got into a "real" college even if I wanted to. hahaha.

i dont really practice, but i do pick up my guitar and try to write stuff. i can see where practicing can help out technically and theoretically, but every time i try getting into a practice routine i just get bored. whats the point of playing guitar (or music in general) if you dont feel rewarded afterward? basically i'll write a song/riff/idea, record it on my four track, and listen to it to hear where my faults are. i feel that being a good musician and writing good songs or themes or movements or whatever is more important than scrambling the fuck out of some body's brain with 132nd notes at 220 bpm in the key of Z minor. not to say that theory and technical prowess is overrated or unimportant though. i think they are very important and i dig the shit out of people that can sweep pick &cetera, and i am no stranger to the shred or the theory myself, but i also think of all the old folk tunes that are still around today that were written by people that couldn't even read text let alone music. you could stomp a hole in the floor tapping your foot to those songs. and thats all i have to say.

If that were true then you wouldnt have graduated high school and you wouldnt have gotten into music college.

I used to practice about 5 hours a day. When I started playing bass, I would play for about 3 or 4 hours, and then when I started getting really in to guitar 5 hours a day on either instrument was the norm. Some days I would play bass more, some days I would play guitar more.
Nowadays, I play bass in a band, but the only time I practice bass whatsoever is at band practice, which is 1-2 times a week. Guitar, because of work and other things, nowadays has also slowed down, with me practicing only about an hour a night, IF that. But soon I'll be in to a new, less demanding job. Until, gotta pay the bills lol.

Ideally: an hour a day
Realistically: an hour a day for about 2 or 3 days per week
Sometimes: lucky if I get an hour in a week

Richey,

I'm exactly where you are at. At work, I look forward to getting home and playing the guitar. Then I get home, and stuff comes up and before I know it, it's time to go to bed.

I think I go home with the intention to play every single day and it rarely happens. If I do play, it usually isn't plugged in.

Here's what happened yesterday:

5:00 off work
5:30 pick up son from in-laws because wife had a closing
5:45 get home realize fire set from day before to burn brush pile was stil burning...since it was after dark bey the time I finished the day before, I had missed some sticks and stuff so I took advantage of the fire still burning and burned the rest while helping son with homework
7:00 take shower...wife wants some "attention".
8:00 get around to preparing supper and eating: spaghetti with ground beef, chopped onions, chopped peppers, mushrooms
9:00 put kid #1 in bed
9:30 put kid #2 in bed
9:45 lie in bed until drift off to sleep

Do you see practicing the guitar anywhere in there? I don't.

To be a musician you have got to be a selfish mofo, my dad was a selfish mofo and so am I, when it comes to my guitar all other attention seekers can wait, I have 2 kids I give them cuddles and tease them a bit before I practise, I have a beautiful daughter Adrienne of 14 and a wonderful son Rian who is 5, my wife does everything because I work. she cooks cleans does all my laundry and ironing etc and does a great job with the kids. and she is doing a good job of trying to make me bankrupt, for example the washing machine broke she ordered a £500 one and paid it on my card while I was at work. the microwave broke a day later £100 that's £600 this month already so when I play my guitar nobodies allowed to disturb me, I work 12 hour shifts so when I'm on nights I cant really practise but on my 3 4 or 5 days off I can play all I like because I'm on rota and the kids are at school and she is out with other mothers doing coffee mornings etc. (hopefully not banging the milkman)....LOL!
