I'm sick of theory! who cares if you can play the mixo mode at 100mph whiles leading in to the aeolian mode or playing the blues/dorian hybrid lydian hungerian minor pentacronic scale in every position, or copying paganinis violin snob riden malarky. give us your favorite riffs in tab form. Dont be shy I know there are a lot of great players sculking around these forums. there may already be a facility for this kind of thing? if so let me know. (you show me yours and I will show you mine) ooh err.

No not at all, Ive seen a lot of what you do and im impressed with it, theres a few things im gonna steal from you that I like, hehe ( isnt that how it works). we are totaly different players influence wise, but I can see what you are doing and its cool stuff. Im not really a shred head, im more of a classic rock player really, although I have borrowed from loads of places like everybody does, its quite strange how people react when I sweep during my deep purple hush solo, and I very seldom tap, Ive noticed that you dont over do things in that department either. you have made quite a contribution to the online community over the years, well done.

This is a exercise I use to warm up. it's easy to play, works hammers and pulls, and involves alot of pinkey. I don't have my guitar handy so I'm not certain I tabbed it out perfectly. Trying to tab stuff from memory is like advanced air guitar (mind guitar)... Also, I replaced the hyphens with the "~" in hopes that the spacing will be maintained a little better in the tab.

E|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
B|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~5h7p5~~~~~~
G|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~6~9v~7~~~~~~~7v~~~
D|~~~~~~~~~~~~~4h7p4~~~~~6h9p6~7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A|~~~~~4h7p4~5~~~~~~~5/7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E|~3/5~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

E|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
B|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G|~9p6~~~6~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
D|~~~~~7~~~9p6~~~6~7p4~~~4~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A|~~~~~~~~~~~~~7~~~~~~~5~~~7p4~~~4~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~5~~~7p4p0~4~5v~~~

I can tab out a more advanced version of this if there is any interest...

I like it, how about your favorite riff or run or musical sequence these are the things I'm after. I really like blues based stuff like the Dorian pentatonic that PG and Blackmore use, and the Zack Wylde pentatonic runs. maybe the Hammett style or Rhodes type runs etc.

You can't escape the theory though, man. ANYTHING you can play or write can be analyzed and explained using music theory. It's nothing more than a language to explain how notes interact with each other.

I think what you were trying to say is you're tired of the neo-classical stuff, the sweep arpeggios, the oddball scales, etc etc. There's a pretty big difference between massive riffage and speed-of-light "hungarian tetraphonic googoltastic proletariat scale in the third" runs. You're tired of a certain style that concentrates on applying a vast knowledge of theory to speed of light histrionics.

In that case, I'm right there with you. I like the ridiculous fast crazy stuff, but sometimes you just have to rock out and ignore the speed. A good balance is what I'd like to get, and I think guys like Paul Gilbert and Andy Timmons are examples of guys who can balance the act.

I suck at making tab work on this site, so I'll just share a favorite chord. Remember to play it clean (maybe with a little bluesy grit...I kind of like that)

E - Open
B - Open
G - 9
D - 9
A - 11
E - Open

It's just a revoiced major chord but it sounds AWESOME.

I want to be able to post tabbed riff's right into the thread without having to upload a screen capture. Anyone know if there is a way to do this without the tab getting stretched out of proportion? If the forum used the same font as in windows notepad I think the tabs would stay together when posted in the thread.

Uploading a screen capture of the riff tabbed in notepad is not that big of a deal but it's extra steps that I think should be un-necessary.

By the way, an easy way to tab out small riffis is to use one of these two online tools...

I know that all music can be analyzed, but the point I'm making is that I think that knowing all theory there is to know is good, and I don't think that I need anymore knowledge, I want to focus on melody and harmony, another point I'm trying to make is, whats the point of playing the locrian or Lydian mode if your a blues player, I don't really like shred as I see it as the epitome of cheese, (NO OFFENSE). on the other hand I don't want to sound like a diatonic moron either. you know what I mean, I think that this is one of the reasons i have found it hard to find a teacher. a friend of mine knows every scale there is, all the modes you could shake a stick at, and he knows the chord constructions as well, but he does not know 1 song all the way through. what I learned early on was get a repertuer. that way I can jam with anyone who plays scimilar stuff or is a covers band. Ive seen a lot of bands but never a neoclassical one. unfortunatly tribute bands rule the uk pub rock sceen.
Thanks for your responses so far,
