Hi All , I have a question for slide players if you could choose a material like brass
or crystal what would make the ultimate slide for you ,www.hoolahan-slides.com

What do you mean, like what features would make the ultimate slide? I like chrome slides, because I havent tried crystal ones yet. I think hoolahan slides have it right, its easier to finger notes.

The hoolahan slides are pretty sweet, often my go-to for electric guitar. They have some of the sustain and sound of big metal slides with the improved control of lightweight glass slides. Not very good against bigger strings though. That's where brass comes into the picture.
I haven't tried a real glass slide yet. Dunlop is in the business of making pyrex slides and their sound blows.

Well, I have a glass slide, but it is too small for my fingers so I have to hold the bastardo with three fingers to get a good sound, but I need to buy one so that I could do chord voicings as well. I would probably like the brass. My favorite slide player has always been Bonnie Rait, and that's what she uses. I love the sound she gets.

Graphite, or maybe coated ebony, rosewood, or bubinga, or another dense wood. I don't know what the sound would be like, and I'm sure sustain would suffer, but I'd love to try one.

start off with glass...then if you get real good move to what ever you prefer. glass is easy to start with learning...i never mastered slide as i didn't hacve the strongest desire but i mess around and got decent enough with glass because it glides easy..get a long one too!

All i do with my slide is mess around. I have an old acoustic with inch high action, and the only thing I can do is slide on it.

So, considering the original poster's name, we missed the fact that the thread is just a shamless plug to his site...

I use a little jar made of glass, that has the exact shape of a slide for guitar :)
I have 3 or 4.

Shameless self promotion aside (I have never used a Hoolahan slide) I have two slides a brass one and a ceramic one. Both are different and I like both although the ceramic is fairly heavy. I'm not a good enough slide player to really promote one type of slide over the other. The two I have each produce a unique sound and I like exploring the the sonic qualities of each. I would enjoy trying out other types of slides so Phil please contact me for my address and I'll be more than happy to have you send me one of your slides to try out.

@duane: Can't say the same for myself. I had seen the link but I didn't really notice the name of the poster.

@Hippieway: When I bought my hoolahan slide a year or two ago, it was in a small local store in GREECE! That looks like a pretty well-established trade network to me, so you're probably crazy if you think you'll get a free sample. That said, I did get mine under the brand of Dunlop, so maybe they have split since and now Hoolahan is tring to make it on his own or something?

Wouldn't be the first time I was thought of as crazy. Yeah both the slides I have now I think are Dunlops one way or the other. And what the hell the worst that can happen is they don't send me one, or if you have heard my slide work maybe the worst that could happen is they do send me one.
