Actually, I think more people use a thick, hard pick for everything. Tons of pros use Jazz III's which aren't soft in the slightest, and Paul Gilbert uses Tortex which are extremely solid.

"do you think that the pick can change the sound of stuff you play"

EVERYTHING changes the "sound of stuff".. from guitar to your touch on the strings to picks to cables to effects to amps to speakers..EVERYTHING.

btw, there is NO rule for what picks are used for what so it's really not "Simple as that".

I usually use a 1mm pick (I'm not picky about the brand--no pun intended. lol). But it really depends on your playing style and personal preference.

I like the Fender 351s made from Delrin. I use the 1.14mm purple ones. My problem is that I have overly aggressive picking habits on bass. Some picks i break in half, others get ground to dust, and still others leave big gouges all over my pickguard. This delrin stuff is really tough, and its what some baby cribs are made out of, so if you chew on picks like me, its non-toxic!!!

I use 1mm dunlop sharps, and the red and black "brain" grip picks by snarling dogs.

I use Tortex, because of their almost unbreakable quality. I used to chew on the mediums until they tore. Not so much anymore. I still use the Dunlops, but mostly the Blue heavies, or the Purple slick finish ones. It has helped my speed tremendously.

I currently use the Big Stubby's. Ya know, the big thick purple ones. Thick picks help you be so much more expressive with electric guitar.

I have V Picks on the way soon, and will be doing a review & interview with the maker. Check www.sixstringsoul.com in the next week or two for the review/interview.
