I posted a couple of weeks ago about The Knack's "My Sharona" and how it the solo sounds very Skynyrd-esque, (I still like the song though), I was wondering if you guys know of any other examples of people ripping off other, more established bands. Chuck Berry comes to mind, Keith Richards ripped him off big time. What I'm really looking for are hard core examples of guitar riffs that obviously belonged to somebody else.

I can't say you are out and out ripping anybody off though. Your style mostly reminds me of David Gilmore, but it's still yours. Excellent work by the way!

That Pearl Jam ballad song with the intro, Yellow Ledbetters, is a total knock off of Little Wing, except it sounds horrible...

there is another song off of Pearl Jam's Ten, forget which song... I think possibly either Alive or Even Flow but I'm not sure.

The solo starts off exactly like Ace Frehley's solo in She.

There is this one song in one of Iron Maiden's albums (I don't remember exactly) that has Rainbow written all over it. So very typical of the Rainbow type of riffing and so very not typical of Maiden. It fools me every freaking time until Bruce kicks in or the break comes in. But I don't think Maiden needed to rip anyone off...

Rip-off is the name of the game in the business world.

Everyone rips everyone else off. I'd rather call it copping!

Take a survey?

Who uses double-stops?
Who taps?
Who does neoclassical arpeggios?
Who uses wide vibratos?
Who does wammy tricks?

If you answered yes to any of these, then you've ........copped! ;-)

doublestops are when you have 2 or more strings plucked simultaniously and then you let pressure off to mute them....
neoclassical arpegios are basically chords, but not played all at once, or "strummed" they are played note by note but very quickly normally, which gives it a classical sound, yet... is very new and cool sounding...........look! another cool pic!woo hoo!-------------->

Yeah, there's copping, agreed, but then there's out and out thievery. The Pearl Jam one joba mentioned was an excellent example. I wonder if they paid any royalties on that one.

Yellow Ledbetter is far from a rip-off to me. Other than having a clean strat and a similar chord progression / embellishments, the similarities end there. I see that one as more of an homage to a hero than a blatant rip off.

Vanilla Ice using the bass line from "Under Pressure" is a great example of what I would call a blatant rip-off. Or the endless hip-hop records that "sample" someone else's music and loop it endlessly. *Those* are total rip-offs.

I'm not a big Pearl Jam listener. I do remember that Hendrix sounding number they did. I would say as long as you openly admit that your paying homage, I don't see a problem with that. It's not like your taking someone else's work and passing it off as your own. As for the hip-hop stuff, oh yeah, I totally agree!!!
